I used size 30 thread and a size 12 hook.
Following the examples above & below:
Graph out your choice of name, making the first letter of the name 7 blocks high. Make the rest of the letters only 5 blocks high. Make the bookmark a total of 9 blocks high. Make it as long as needed. Start with an odd number of filet blocks for bottom row. Make the ends patterned after the ends of the bookmarks pictured above. (See below for block instructions, and a link for my template or blank graph paper)
After you have graphed out your pattern, make a chain the required length (the number of blocks on the starting row times 3, plus 6). Then crochet the bookmark following your chart, starting from the lower right hand corner. (After you chain your starting chain, the first dc goes in the 9th chain from the hook).
After you finish the filet part of you bookmark, here is the edging which includes a curly tassel:
Edging, starting with upper corner by the first letter of name:
In 1st space make sc, hdc, 2dc, chain3, slst in dc, dc, hdc, sc.
In 2nd space made 3 sc.
In 3rd space make sc, hdc, 2dc, chain 3, slst in dc, dc, hdc, sc.
In 4th space make 2 sc.
In 5th space make sc, 5 dc, [ch5, slst in 5th chain from hook] three times, stst in 1st stst that was made, slst in dc below, 5dc, sc.
In 6th space make 2 sc.
In 7th space make sc, hdc, 2dc, chain 3, slst in dc, dc, hdc, sc.
In 8th space make 3 sc.
In 9th space make sc, hdc, 2dc, chain 3, slst in dc, dc, hdc, sc.
Long side of edging below the name:
* In next square make 3 sc. In next square make 2 sc, chain 4, slst in top of sc below, 1 sc.
Repeat from *, until just before next corner space.
Edging/other end of bookmark (including curly tassel):
In 1st corner sp make sc, hdc, 2dc, chain3, slst in dc, dc, hdc, sc.
In 2nd space made 3 sc.
In 3rd space make sc, hdc, 2dc, chain 3, slst in dc, dc, hdc, sc.
In 4th space make 2 sc.
In 5th space make sc, 5 dc, chain 40, turn. Put 4 dc in 4th chain from hook. Put 4 dc in each chain to within last 6 or 7 of chain length. Chain 1, 2 sc over last dc slst at base of last dc. Chain 1. Slst up the remainder of chain back to bookmark. Slst in top of last dc on bookmark, then make 5dc and 1 sc in the remainder of the 5th space.
In 6th space make 2 sc.
In 7th space make sc, hdc, 2dc, chain 3, slst in dc, dc, hdc, sc.
In 8th space make 3 sc.
In 9th space make sc, hdc, 2dc, chain 3, slst in dc, dc, hdc, sc.
Long side of edging above the name:
* In next square make 3 sc. In next square make 2 sc, chain 4, slst in top of sc below, 1 sc.
Repeat from * until you reach first sc of round. Join and fasten off.
