Cherie Central By Amanda Swift When you see her wearing tennis shoes and blue jeans, you'd never know that Cindy Almouzni is an up-and-coming pop star. Cindy, nicknamed Cherie, released her self-titled debut album on August 3. It's packed with singles and is already gaining recognition throughout the country. She has appeared on episodes of As The World Turns and The Bachelor as a musical guest. Cherie is also currently touring the country with American Idol's Clay Aiken. Scholastic News Online met up with Cherie outside her apartment in midtown Manhattan and took a walk to Central Park to hang out and get to know the talented newcomer. About Cherie Cherie was born in Marseilles, France, in 1984, and is the youngest of three kids. She has been performing on stage since she was 9 years old and can sing in four languages; Spanish, Italian, French, and English. At age 12, she won the French National Vocalist Award. "It was a lot of hard work and I was very scared," Cherie told Scholastic News Online. "Winning that competition was like a great gift for working so hard for so long." For the 19-year-old singer, this album shows her transformation from a little girl to a young woman. Through her songs "I'm Ready" and "Older Than My Years," Cherie expresses what it feels like to grow up. "When I hear music, when I am singing, I am happy," Cherie said. "I am growing up and music is, for me, where all of the emotions and things which I am feeling come together." Cherie at Play In the little bit of free time she has, Cherie is a typical teenage girl. She loves watching movies. Her favorite movie is Gone with the Wind. "I think it's because of the character Scarlett [O'Hara]," she said. "I always thought that women should be strong and I always felt that she [Scarlett] is a good example." Cherie also loves to go shopping and dancing, and to hang out in Central Park with her friends. Cherie at Work The pop star has made several sacrifices in pursuit of her dream of being a singer. She left her home in France to move to Los Angeles and record her album. She spent three months in New York City to promote the album. In July, she moved back to Los Angeles to prepare for her tour with Clay Aiken. After the tour, Cherie plans to return to New York. "I'll be singing seven songs," Cherie said about her tour. "I'll be doing 'Older Than My Years,' 'I Believe in You,' 'My Way Back Home,' 'When You Say You Love Me,' 'It's Your Love,' 'Betcha Never,' and 'I'm Ready.'" Cherie stays focused by remembering to have fun while working. She also brings her pillow with her on trips for the added sense of security the familliar object gives her. "When I get stressed or doubtful, I remember when I was 10 and everything was so fun," Cherie said. "If you don't get any pleasure from what you are doing, then what's the point?" Plans for the Future While Cherie is making a name for herself as a singer, she's also interested in other career paths, like writing and acting. She wants to write her own songs, but insists that it must be her own decision when she is ready. "I don't want to do it because people want me to," she stressed. "I want to do it for myself." Acting has intrigued Cherie since she was a little girl. But, like writing songs, she insists that it come to her must naturally. "I don't want to be someone who is trying to be as famous as possible," Cherie said. "I really want to try to do something good. I don't want to act in anything just to do it." Although Cherie is still new to the music industry, she had a little bit of advice to offer kids with the dream of becoming a singer. "Always try your hardest and always keep trying, no matter what happens," she said. |
