The kids really have a blast when we do our pumpkin unit and so do I! There are many subject areas and state standards that can be covered by exploring pumpkins. For example, we:

  • Measured the circumference with string, the height with unifix cubes and made comparisons of the data collected

  • Estimated the number of seeds in each pumpkin

  • Made predictions whether pumpkins could float; brainstormed why  pumpkins float

  • Charted describing words on a large pumpkin based on personal experience of how the inside of a pumpkin feels, looks, tastes and smells

  • Wrote and illustrated a book about pumpkins

  • Learned how plants grow by planting the pumpkin seeds in baggies

  • Graphed who liked pumpkin shakes and who did not
