We become authors and illustrators the first day of kindergarten. Daily journal writing in which children write their own stories is an effective way for learning phonics and other components of written language because writing in journals is a risk-free environment, provides opportunities to play with written language, and builds children's confidence as writers.

OUR BOOK OF LETTERS TO FARMER BROWN

At the end of the year, we read CLICK, CLACK, MOO Cows That Type
by Doreen Cronin. After reading this delightful book, we learned the parts of a letter and practiced writing our own by pretending to be one of
Farmer Brown's farm animals.
The prompts written on the board were: Dear Farmer Brown, and Sincerely,
