(AT RISE: BOB is speaking with his mother; CHRISTINA, he has just been thrown out of his house by his wife.)

BOB walks into the house, CHRISTINA is sitting on a rocking chair knitting.

                                                                        BOB

Hi mom, Im going to spend the night all right

                                                                        CHRISTINA

Oh, why hello sweetie, why are you spending the night?

                                                                        BOB

Ugh, its a long story, and Im really tired.  Are the towels still in the dryer?

                                                                        CHRISTINA

No, I moved them, they are in the closet in the hall, why dont you tell me what is going on?  Perhaps I can give you some advice.

                                                                        BOB

No mom, its complicated, and Im tired.

                                                                        CHRISTINA

Hmm, its that tramp again isnt it!

                                                                        BOB

Mom, please, I dont need this right now!

                                                                        CHRISTINA

I warned you about her, no woman who takes her clothes off for money is worth this hardship.

                                                                        BOB

Mom, honestly, she did what she had to do when she was younger, nothing more, you cant put someone down because they were desperate enough to do something like that.

                                                                        CHRISTINA

Oh please, for someone with such great vision you sure are blind!  Shes been using you since the day she met you, and you know it!

                                                                        BOB

Mom, she hasnt, shes just going through something right now, shell get over it, and everything will be fine soon.

                                                                        CHRISTINA

Ha, if you believe that youre a fool, and I did not raise a fool.  You better get your act together, because Im not going to be around forever you know.

                                                                        BOB

Mom, come on cant we

                                                                        CHRISTINA

Dont you come on me!  Im serious; I have one foot in the grave according to the doctors.  I dont have much time left, and I refuse to watch my son allow himself to be stepped on!

                                                                        BOB

Damn it mom, shes not stepping on me, I told you shes going through some changes, shes not used to the relationship, and we probably moved a bit too quickly.  We should have waited longer to get married.

                                                                        CHRISTINA

Ill tell you what you should of done, that is not get married to that tramp!

                                                                        BOB

Shes not a tramp!  Shes

                                                                        CHRISTINA

Didnt she also pick your friend Sams wallet once, in that god-awful club?

                                                                        BOB

Yes, at least thats the way Sam tells it.

                                                                        CHRISTINA

Oh, so now she has you against your own friend?  Well, then its only a matter of time before she has you against me, a defenseless old woman, whos only concern throughout her entire life has been her only son.

                                                                        BOB

Mom

CHRISTINA continued talking without paying attention to BOB

                                                                        CHRISTINA

You know if it wouldnt have been for me you wouldnt of had anything.  That good for nothing father of yours just went up and left just two days after you were born.  He said he couldnt stand being held back.  Funny how he couldnt stand it, but I had to.

                                                                        BOB

Yes, yes, mom Ive heard this

                                                                        CHRISTINA

You shut your mouth!  I didnt go through all this pain and suffering to have my own son patronize me!

                                                                        BOB

But, Im not

                                                                        CHRISTINA

Not what?  You just shut your mouth and sit down and listen for once!

                                                                        BOB

Okay, okay, Im sorry for patronizing you Im just really tired cant I just

                                                                        CHRISTINA

Not until I am done!  Tomorrow, you will go over to that house, and I will be with you!  You will get a hold of your life, or I will beat you senseless until you do!  Just because Im seventy doesnt mean I dont have any fight left in me!  Ive beaten your no good father, and Ill do the same to you, until you become a man!

                                                                        BOB

Mom, you just dont understand!

                                                                        CHRISTINA

I understand completely!  You should have asked for that prenuptial agreement, now look; shes going to take everything from you!  Oh, god where did I go wrong?  How could my only son have grown to be worst than his father?

                                                                        BOB

Mom, please I dont need this now!  Everything will be worked out between Jamie and me; were, just going through a few curves in the road.

                                                                        CHRISTINA

Curves, ha, thats what they call it now?

                                                                        BOB

Look, mom, Jamie is a good person, shes going to see the light, and were going to work everything out.

                                                                        CHRISTINA

Im telling you, you become more nave every day, that woman will be the end of you.

                                                                        BOB

Mom, listen, tomorrow Im going to find out more about this situation that Im in with her.  Dont think I walked into this blind, because I didnt.

                                                                        CHRISTINA

What exactly did you do to take precautions?  Put everything under your name instead of hers?

                                                                        BOB

No, I hired a private investigator about a week before we got married.  I wanted to make sure she was clean and not doing any of her old tricks.

                                                                        CHRISTINA

Some use thats going to be for you!

                                                                        BOB

Trust me mom, it will get me the money, the house, and the baby shes carrying.

                                                                        CHRISTINA

Baby?  You have a baby coming?

                                                                        BOB

Yes, shes pregnant, and I think thats why shes doing this.  But regardless if shes doing this for any other reason, Ill get everything.

                                                                        CHRISTINA

Just because a private investigator says something doesnt prove it, wheres your proof of anything, and what if she isnt doing anything wrong?

                                                                        BOB

If she isnt then we can work things out between each other.  And I hope she isnt Id hate for her to be out of the babys life.

                                                                        CHRISTINA

I cant believe my grandchild is going to be half a slut.

                                                                        BOB

Mom, please, Im going to bed now okay, Im very tired.

                                                                        CHRISTINA

Fine, Ill have some oatmeal ready for you when you wake up

                                                                        BOB

Umok thanks mom.

                                                                        CHRISTINA

Oh, dont act that way it was your favorite meal all your life.

                                                                        BOB

Your right, good night

BOB finally leaves the room, goes back stage and speaks only the audience can hear him.

                                                                        BOB

Hi, Jimyeah, I need you to bring me anything you might have on my wifeis it a lot?...well bring it to me tomorrow morning, Im at my mothers houseyeah thats the addressokay, Ill have the money for you.  Oh, and Im going to need you to testify for mewow that much, okay, Ill come up with it somehow.  Bye.
