Chenies Street Chambers
Photograph taken by Richard Carpenter, 31 May 2002
The tips of the angels wings are just visible in the architrave above flat 3 of Chenies Street Chambers. The panels, sculpted by Victorian artist Ellen Mary Rope, were exhibited at the Chicago World Exhibition in 1893 and then acquired for the chapel of Chenies Street Chambers, through the intervention of Rope's old art teacher, Octavia Hill. The original panels are white, but the architrave (and the walll) was sprayed with purple portafleck paint during Camden Council's repainting of the building in the late 1980's/ early 1990's.
In March 2002, after a four month communal discussion with the tenants and residents of Chenies Street Chambers, the communal walls of the building were repainted Dulux Heritage Victorian 19 (and the skirting boards and fire doors Dulux gloss Mid-Brunswick Green) under the supervision of Camden Council Project Manager Kieran Bukowski. This sensitive repainting of the buildingl, using period colours, has helped to restore some of its original character. Thanks, Kieran.
