Hanwei on the Role of Junsheng in "Springs of Life"

The lucky pampered kid in "Springs of Life"

Chen Hanwei: Acting as a "ya ya" rich man's son, shiok!

In this line for more than ten years, he has acted the roles of artist, devoted lover, teacher... This time in "Springs of Life" he acts as a very "ya ya" (arrogant), annoying rich man's son for the first time.

"Very nice! Ha ha, because it's only in the show that I can do what the real me will not do. I am normally a ...soft person. Only when things happen then I will raise my voice and express my stand. In "Springs of Life", I am blaming and scolding people loudly everyday without a care. I am always ordering this and that, the moment I opened my mouth. If not, I will be putting on "Huh, so what" kind of expression, really disgusting. But this kind of role is very good to let off, very fun, ha!"

If you see such a person...

"Wow, really disgusting, I really dislike this, very uncultured."

Did he use anyone as the model for imitation...?

"...No..yes lah. If  I say like that won't I be offending people. Ha ha (obviously he's very alert indeed). Actually there is some disgusting aspect in every person's character more or less. I will observe more and see more shows. Learn a bit from different places, and then add in my own idea..."

But even the pampered kid has his moment of ill luck...

There is one sub-plot where Zhou Junsheng acted by Hanwei quarreled with his father and left home in a huff. He was penniless but proud and so suffered failures everywhere he went. At one stage he even had to take shelter in the streets. Instead of  wearing sparkling clean clothes, he was left with a thin singlet and shorts. Previously he had shiny creamed hair and clean-cut look, suddenly he had unkempt hair and an unshaved dirty face. Finally he fainted and even mistook Chew Chor Meng's leg as chicken drumstick and took a bite at it ...

"The back lane  where the scene was shot was near Joo Chiat. When the lights were on, you could see many cockroaches, rats "swish" rushing about. It's very, very dirty. We suffered there for three days...and also had to endure rain beating on us. Now when I think of it...ah...(he showed his whole body trembling)"

Has there been such painful experience during film shooting?

"Yes ~. This is considered chicken feat lah compared to long time ago when I was shooting a period drama. It's middle of the night I had to go into the mine pool at Little Guilin. You know lah, that's stagnant water. Tortoises, water snakes, it's got everything...I have to soak my whole body into the water, dive in to find things ah...That was when I just entered this line. I still can remember till now... After bathing at home, the stench of soil and mud still stayed between my nails. Aiyah...Do you want to try? Ha ha..."

From Chew Chor Meng to Huang Wenyong, from Carole Lin to Li Ying Choo, almost everyone is acting comedic role..."Mine there isn't...Before this I have discussed with the producer. I just act in this way...I will not laugh at all!"

Does he have a hard time trying to hold back his laughter?

"No choice leh. But don't find it hard lah. After filming my part, I can laugh aloud with everyone mah. No problem. I rather have comedy outside the show leh..." (On careful thought, it really should be like this.)

"Springs of Life" is 60 episodes long. Is filming very hard?

"Actually not really. We all got along very well. Also because of filming this show, I got to know many friends like Su Chicheng (Calvin Soh), Xiao Pei (Carole), Lilin, Ching Xian (Sharon) ah. Now we still ask each other out for meals and chit-chat!"

"Erm..like Chicheng. Before knowing him, I thought he's very cold. After getting familiar with him, I realise he is naughtier than anyone. This guy is very funny...haha...The reason I like him to be my friend is because he is very genuine! Those plastic people (hypocrites) ha, I don't like...I am not taken in by such ways. I am very happy to have such a good friend. This is my biggest bonus filming this show."

But, filming "Springs" isn't one big happy event

"There was a scene which showed the opening ceremony of my hospital. I am supposed to go on stage to give a speech. From 7 in the morning to 7 at night, the whole show was centred on  me. The whole atmosphere is very joyful. After only one shot, when I was getting ready to give a happy speech, I received a call from my friend telling me that my dog was knocked dead by a car. I controlled myself from the beginning to the end. I put on a very happy front and continued filming. I endured till night when the whole scene was filmed and rushed back to settle the matter. But I could no longer see my dog's dead body. They had moved it away...This is my most unforgetable, most unforgetable, most difficult, most difficult scene.

At the filming set I didn't shed a tear, but the moment I reached home, I cried..."

Hanwei's dog is 3 years old called "Mei Mei" also known as  "Fei Po". Two years ago Hanwei adopted it from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals." "Fei Po" is famous. She had appeared with Hanwei on "i-weekly", the most highly circulated entertainment magazine locally leh.

...Then, will Hanwei still--

"No! (Before I could finish asking, he immediately answered) Don't want to keep pet dog again. I don't want to have this kind of feeling. I really don't want..." This is Hanwei's first pet dog in Singapore.

"Hai, too bad..."
