Welcome to my Page on Gases and their Behavior

This page contains simple and straightforward tutorials on important gas laws such as: Boyle's Law, Charles' Law, the Pressure Law, the Ideal Gas Equation, Avogadro's Principle, Dalton's Law of Partial Pressures, and Graham's Law of Diffusion. It also contains explanations on some of the important concepts that govern the physical behavior of gases when they are subjected to certain conditions within a closed system.

Some of the important topics in this tutorial are summarized below. For a more detailed description of each topic, please click on the corresponding link for a more detailed description. Most of the tutorials are accompanied with easy-to-understand illustrations such as diagrams, graphs and lots more.

The Kinetic Theory of Matter

Boyles Law: P1V1 = P2V2

Charles Law:  V1/T1 = V2/T2

The Pressure Law: P1/T1 = P2/T2

The General Gas Equation (Combined Gas Law): P1V1/T1 = P2V2/T2

The Ideal Gas Equation: PV = nRT or PV=gRT/M or P = dRT/M

Avogadro's Principle

Dalton's Law of Partial Pressures: Ptotal = PA + PB + PC

Diffusion of Gases - Graham's Law

Graham's Law of Diffusion RA*(dA)= RB*(dB)

The original version of this handout was only on explaining gas laws, equations, and concepts such as: Boyle's Law, Charles' Law, the Pressure Law, the General Gas Equation, and the Ideal Gas Equation. It did not contain some of the diagrams and additional explanations that I have included in this particular edition.

Later on, I decided to make some changes to the original version and then add other concepts as well as better diagrams to it, so that my explanations will be clearer. Some of these modifications include the diagrams and graphs that I created myself so that I can use them as illustrations on whatever point that I am trying to make.

At this point, it gives me great pleasure to seize this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to Dr. Ana Ciereszko, my Chemistry Instructor in the "Bridges to the Future Program." for her spending her invaluable time in editing this piece of information; I will also like to thank you, its reader, for paying your undivided attention while studying with it.

If there is any misspelling or misrepresentation of any information in the accompanying pages that might lead to your misinterpretation or misunderstanding of any of my explanations, please do not hesitate to let me know. If you would like to have the documented version of this handout (in *pdf, *doc, or *zip) simply email your request to me at this page , and a copy of it shall be sent to your email account as a file.

Thank you very much for your attention, and thank you for visiting my page on "Gases and their Behavior" I hope this work will be of help to you in your studies.
