Both sets of steps were getting louder the closer they approached. “I’ll tell you later. Right now we have to figure out what we are going to do.” Amanda nodded.
“Hurry, Dean it’s two minutes until midnight,” hollered Emma from above.
“Oh my, it’s getting close to midnight, Austin. I guess we better hurry,” spoke Elisa from right below.
Amanda looked up while Lee looked down, pretty much stuck between a rock and a hard place.
And now on with our show:
Amanda’s heart beat faster. How were they going to get out of this predicament? From above Dean and his girlfriend were making their way down the stairs. And from below someone was coming up. The door that led to the sixth floor was within her view. Six steps and they’d be free. Did they have enough time to reach it? Amanda grabbed Lee’s arm. “What are we going to do?” She mouthed.
At that moment, a hacking cough could be heard below them and Amanda heard raised voices. “Austin, do you have to blow smoke in my face.”
“Sorry, my dear.” That voice, it’s--no it can’t be, could it? Oh my gosh, Dr. Smyth and Elisa Danton were the couple on the way up the stairs. It was one pairing she never would’ve thought of in a million years.
“Hurry.” Lee tugged on her arm and they quickly went down the steps to the door. Lee pushed the bar to open it and they entered the sixth floor corridor. Amanda looked down the corridor. Their room was at the end of the hall, could they make it in time? They were going to get caught.
The elevator was across from the stairwell door in front of them and the doors were open.
“Why did you stop? Come on we need to--”
“This will be quicker.” She pointed to the elevator.
Two long strides and Lee put his hand out to halt the progress of the doors closing. “Hold the elevator.”
“No problem.” A husky voice came from inside. “Come on there’s room for two more.”
They squeezed into the crowded elevator. There was barely room to turn around or breathe. Being slender had its advantages and they were able to turn to face the doors. Lee’s arms wrapped around her waist drawing her next to his body and she felt his erection press into her back. As the doors started to close, she noticed in the glass panel of the stairwell door blonde hair. Elisa. Please close, now! She lifted her eyes towards the ceiling; her prayers were answered when the doors started sliding shut. The doors were inches from being closed when a puff of smoke entered causing Amanda to cough. Dr. Smyth turned towards the sound and she saw him glance their direction. Thankfully, the doors closed so he couldn’t see inside and they started their descent down.
It seemed to take forever. Of course, it had to stop on practically every floor. When people saw how crowded it was, they just looked away and started towards the stairwell. When it stopped on the second floor a voice from the back of elevator exclaimed. “If we don’t hurry, we’re going to miss seeing the ball drop in Times Square.”
Lifting Lee’s arm Amanda looked down at his watch. Ten minutes to midnight. Enough time to get back to their room and ring in the New Year together. “Are we going to make it?” Lee asked his lips pressed to her ear.
Amanda nodded her head. “I think so. I just remembered Dean always set his watch ten minutes ahead because he didn’t want to be late for anything.”
“Never wants to be late? Pretty dependable, huh?”
“Very funny.”
The elevator dinged indicating it had reached the ground floor. When the doors opened the throng behind them surged forward pushing them out. Before they had a chance to turn around the doors closed. Lee was about to hit the button to summon another one when Leatherneck walked up to them, his arm around a tall red head.
“There you two are. Come on it’s almost midnight. Don’t ya want to see the ball drop in Times Square?”
“Wouldn’t miss it for the world.” Amanda agreed turning to Lee she tried to communicate with her eyes that she’d make it up to him later.
“Me either, guess we should get moving.”
As they made their way back to the party they let Leatherneck and his companion walk ahead of them. “I’m sorry, sweetheart. We’ll leave as soon as we can. I promise.”
“We better, I want to be alone with my wife. Soon. If not, everyone is going to know our secret, because I don’t want to keep my hands off you much longer.”
Amanda hesitated wondering if she should tell Lee what Madame Alexianna had told her earlier. Maybe the time was right to let everyone in on the facts. This wasn’t the place to have the conversation though, later up in their room she’d bring it up.
People were running back and forth in a hurry to get to their respective parties. “Excuse me,” a man said as he pushed his way between them. At the entrance to the IFF party they ran into Prince Nikki rubbing his cheek looking sad and dejected.
“Nik, what happened?” Lee put his arm around his old friend.
“Francine.”
“Francine did that to you? Why?” Amanda wondered aloud.
“She said I couldn’t just waltz back into her life expecting her to drop everything and pick up where we left off.” Nik looked down at the floor and continued. “I guess I’ll have to get over her.”
“You could fight for her, romance her, show her the new man you are now.” Lee tried to sound encouraging.
“Lee’s right. You need to woo her.”
“I don’t know.” Nikki rubbed his cheek again, looking up and staring at something behind Lee. “She packs a mean punch.”
Amanda spotted what Nikki stared at. A buxom brunette licked her lips and ran her hand along her thigh as she watched the prince. “I guess it wasn’t meant to be, Lee. I’ll catch up with you later.” Nikki slapped Lee on the back and went to greet the brunette.
“Well,” Amanda put her hands on her hips. “I think Francine is better off without him if he can be distracted that quickly by a pretty face.”
Lee picked up Amanda’s hand and gently kissed it. “Looks like he hasn’t found the right woman to tame him.” He winked.
A waiter carrying a tray of champagne glasses passed and Lee took two from him, handing one to Amanda. “We might as well watch the ball drop since we’re here.”
They made their way towards the bandstand where a huge screen had been set up televising the festivities going on in New York City.
The sound in the ballroom was almost deafening as people started blowing horns and yelling.
The lighted ball started its descent. Ten . . . nine . . . eight . . . everyone shouted. Seven . . . six . . . five . . . it began to pick up speed. Amanda held her breath and looked deep into Lee’s eyes as she counted the last few seconds. Four . . . three . . . two . . . one. Happy New Year! Balloons and confetti rained down from the ceiling.
Everyone kissed around them; no one paid attention to anyone else but who they were kissing. Before she had a chance to make her move, Lee put his arm around her and pressed her body to his capturing her lips in a deep passionate kiss. They kissed hungrily until the sounds of ‘Auld Lang Syne’ penetrated their brain. After their lips parted they each took a sip of champagne and started singing along with the song.
Across the room Amanda noticed Francine kissing Ephraim Beaman more passionately than the steamiest soap opera kiss she had ever seen on her mother’s favorite soap. Maybe seeing Prince Nikki earlier showed Francine who her real soul mate is and he had been in front of her face all along, waiting to sweep her off her feet. She hoped so; Francine deserved some happiness in her love life. And now Amanda had something to come back at her with whenever she made barbs about her and Lee.
Sipping her champagne Amanda scanned the room noticing several other couples taking advantage of the tradition of kissing the one you’re with at midnight. Paul Barnes had the busty porn star wannabe, Crystal, who had made a play for Lee earlier in the evening in a lip lock against the wall. The Wizard seemed to be enjoying himself immensely trying to get his hand up her slinky dress.
Hitting a falling balloon into the air, she continued to people watch. Rupert looked like he was having the time of his life - - Glynis on one arm, Lois on the other.
Billy and Jeannie were acting like two lovebirds, instead of an old married couple. She hoped that after she and Lee had been married as long as they had they’d still be as romantic as them.
“Look,” Amanda pointed to a man kissing a group of girls from the steno pool as of it was the last kiss he’d ever bestow on a woman. “Isn’t that the Australian Prime Minister?”
“Yup, I’m glad he isn’t anywhere near you. The only lips touching yours will be mine.” He put his hand on the back of her neck and pulled to him capturing her lips in a tender kiss. Lee took her champagne glass from her and placed it on the tray of a passing waiter. “I’m not waiting any longer. I don’t care who sees us. We’re leaving. Now!”
Amanda nodded her head in agreement. Lee took her hand and they made their way to the exit.
Passing through the crowd Amanda saw a woman grabbing a man’s butt as they kissed. Oh my gosh, the woman was Mrs. Marston and the man - - TP. Once she got over the initial shock of seeing the prim and proper Mrs. Marston groping her friend. Who knows maybe they’ll be good for one another.
“Have fun you two.”
Lee barely slowed down and acknowledged Billy. “I plan on it.”
Amanda turned and glanced at Billy who lifted his glass of champagne to them and winked as they left the room.
The elevator was empty and after Lee punched the sixth floor he pressed Amanda up against the wall. His hands skimmed along her body massaging her breasts through the thin material making her shiver in anticipation. Their lips met in passion. Her fingers ran along his hard cock and she unzipped his pants.
“Ding.” The elevator doors opened.
“Well now what do we have here?”
