You've never heard anything like the haunting sounds of Nick Drake's Way to Blue.
Let's think back to summer camp a few days ago. I was sitting in my fellow counselor Katy's room as she was telling me about some music that she thought was incredible. Wait...let's go back further. How about a year or so ago? I'm sitting in my living room and on the TV is a commercial for a Volkswagen Cabrio. People are driving at night and there's this music, this beautiful sound in the background. That's when I first fell in love with Nick Drake. And it's the first time I heard "Pink Moon" - one of many amazing songs he recorded in the late 60s/early 70s before his death. Katy played the CD for me, and I was mesmerized. She skipped to "Pink Moon" to remind me of where I had heard the soothing voice before, but I was already taken by the sweet notes of "Cello Song" the first track. Nick Drake is considered a folk singer by anybody who is forced to categorize him. However, his music captures so much more than the usual sound of folk music. He dug much deeper than most would have or possibly knew how. Songs like "Time of No Reply" and "River Man" are deep and dark but beautiful at the same time. Other songs like "One of These Things First" and "Hazey Jane 2" reveal a lighter side but still embrace the same beauty and depth. This CD is appropriately entitled "Way to Blue: An Introduction to Nick Drake". I urge you to make his acquaintance. You will not be disappointed in your new friend.
