Music
Traditional
Not many people know that early Korean traditional music actually influenced China and Japan's style of music. Later on, these cultures also, in turn, influenced Korea's music.
Tempo
The Western genre(or music that we listen to)of music's tempo is based on a heart beat whereas the Jeong-ak genre's tempo is based on the player's inhalation and exhalation -- or breathing. Therefore, Korean music is much slower and calmer.
Tone
The tone of Korean music is very warm and soft due to the fact that Korean instruments are made differently. Western instruments are mostly made out of metal -- for example, flutes and trumpets. In Korea, the instruments are usually made out of wood for a softer tone. Also, the wire strings on Western instruments like violins and cellos are replaced with silk in Korea for a warmer tone.
Dance
There used to be 56 original court dances but only a few are remembered today. A few of the dances are: The Mask Dance, The Crane Dance, and Nightingale-Singing-In-The-Spring Dance.
Modern dance has come to Korea through Jo Taek-won and Choe Seung-hui. The Seoul Ballet Company was founded in 1950 and was the first organization to perform modern dance and ballet.
Literature
Early Korean literature was greatly influenced by religion with Buddhism being the most effective. Chinese letters were often used in the early days. The first classical fictions in Korea were Kim Si-seup's Geumosinhwa (Tales of Geumo) which was written in Chinese characters and Heo Gyun's Honggildongjeon (Tales of Hong Gil-dong) written in Korean script.
