"once upon a time..."

A long time ago, in a distant land, in a rather uninteresting quadrant of a relatively unremarkable galaxy, the year 1980 was upon the people... That spring, an event occurred that would forever change the course of events; and thus we have Shawn L. D'Penha.

But that is history, in the past and while numerous people have tried to impress upon me, the need to dwell on history, least we repeat it, I have never been a big fan of that school of thought. If you keep looking back, hoping to avoid the mistakes you have made, you will not notice that low hanging tree branch that is right in your way as you drive your convertible at a hundred miles an hour down the highway that is life.

disclaimer : Do be advised that the tree branch is purely metaphorical and I highly recommend you try to avoid such a situation!

"he's a dog..!"

To get back to me though; I am just your typical uber-capitalist, imperialistic-dog hangover from the glory days of Expansionism and Colonialization. As a matter of fact, I am best described as a culturally sterilized product of the above! For those of you who do know me, you know what I mean and for those who don't, don't lose too much sleep over it; there are many more out there. I shall leave out the details of where I have been and who I have traumatized in the course of history, but suffice to say it spans all the way across the globe. Still, deep down, I'm just a boy, standing in front of a planet, asking to conquer it. As an almost comically ironic twist, I have never set foot in the land of the free, having been thrown out not once, but twice by the INS! Dogs, all of them, or maybe inadvertently doing me a favour?

"get to the point..."

By now, even I feel like I have waffled on, so without further ado, let's get to the point (coincidentally, a favourite phrase of mine). My name, if you haven't guessed or deduced by now is Shawn, look harder and you will figure out my last name too! The secret is the "L" and that is classified info. I'm 21, or shall be till the 12th of April at which point I turn 22 and come one step closer to my mid-life crisis, where I start dating a 25 year old and driving a convertible, all while attempting to be "hip" to the latest trends. Come to think of it, it doesn't sound like a very bad proposition at all! Age, after all is about as relative as a nagging aunt!

And what do I do for fun when I am not contemplating taking over the world? Well, I like to think I am relatively multi-dimensional, and so have developed a long list of hobbies and interests, from hockey to mycology to photography to cooking, and attempting to learn to cross-stitch!

The result of this all is something to the effect of the renaissance cowboy-nerd! Yes, picture if you will daVinci in a Stetson hat, sitting atop, not a horse, but an irate moose, a six-shooter in one holster and a palm pilot in the other, while making a break for the state line, while dreaming up a political manifesto to crush the unions of the world and negotiating what wine goes with steak tartar and you have a very close approximation of me, or what I want to be...

Socially, I am something of a cyclical recluse, a delightful system I have devised in which I disappear for a while on end, then surface to enjoy all the benefits of a social life, then repeat it - sort of like brushing your teeth...

"but what about school..."

In spite of all the despotic tendencies, I do actually go to school and study and stress and all those related activities. For now, I am at York U for what I hope is my last semester. Who would ever have imagined being a bureaucrat would have been so boring! I am a business admin major who is looking to jump into Law School to be a corporate lawyer, so that some day I might defend a poor hapless corporation against the evil eco-freaks, and those "save the poor people" side-shows! That said, I am also looking at joining the Navy. If either possibility alarms you, stay tuned for the latest news, before BBC can run it off!

"and for fun..."

Yes, neo-imperialist dog also have fun. In my case, perhaps a little more so than most, but that likely has something to do with the fact that I enjoy of lot of seemingly mundane tasks more than I likely ought to. That said, I do have hobbies per se... The perennial favourite is photography; perhaps a little less so at the moment, but that's a function of too much school work. In addition to that, I quite fancy opening up things, an activity that began with me as a wee lad. Cars and computers are my preferred subjects, just simply as I have a higher level of success putting them back together, but by no means is the experimentation limited to them. I do have a diploma in auto mech workings and one in computers too, which would explain something. Other favourite activities of mine are reading old Cold War and WW2 fiction, listening to a wide array of music, traveling, cooking, gardening, biking. Interests span the spectrum from politics which I am actively involved in to Genetic Research I wish I was actively involved in, and covers astronomy, finance, global issues, international cuisine, meteorology, modern history, and wines.
