They's "storyline" concerns a group of folks trapped in the north woods as the world comes to an end. From what, you ask? Red lights. Not just any red lights, mind you. But evil ones. These nasty things glow as 1950's style "laboratory" sound effects resonate in the background. The plot really starts moving as...Well, to be perfectly honest, I guess it really never starts at all. The flick moves pretty slowly. However, it does offer some of the worst incidental music in the history of film.
As the film moves on, our heroes are trapped in a cabin; using only the most modern of techniques to contact the outside world - radio (okay, okay, this was made in the 70's). They constantly speak back and forth to the same character, yet continue to impersonally repeat each call letter from the radio they use. Hello? Anyone home? These are the only few people remaining on Earth. You can be a little more personal - there's NO ONE ELSE LEFT ALIVE!!!
The film concludes on a down note as the "invaders" wipe out the entire population. I guess it turns out the villains are some kind of aliens(?) from the Earth's core. However, I've only come to this conclusion from the alternate title, Invasion From Inner Earth. And if these thinds ARE from inside our planet, why is there a flying saucer in outer space during the opening scene? Oh well. I guess They is best described as a mystery - much like the ancient pyramids.
The Low Point: The music over the opening credits shamelessly rips off the theme from The Good The Bad and The Ugly - and turns it into DISCO in the process.
The High Point: The red light is the best actor in this film.
The Bottom Line: Rent They if you can find it. It can be a little slow - but it's a hoot. Watch to the final scene and enjoy, cheesebrains!
