The Last Slumber Party

This has been a really tough one for me to review. It seems every time I watch this stinker, it is imediately erased from memory. This time I took notes, though.

The Last Slumber Party is a 1987 shot on video slasher flick directed by Stephen Tyler (not Steven Tyler!). It's one of those heavy metal driven gore fests typical of this period, only this one offers bad acting, bad plot, awful sets, lousy lighting, incompitent sound and a villian (played by Tyler) with Diddy Kong-like bug eyes.

The Slumber Party Massacre films succeeded due to decent gore and funny dialogue. This one fails because, quite frankly, the gore sucks and the situations are ludicrous. It seems a maniac has escaped from a hospital. He kills a nurse and heads straight for his doctor(!)'s house, where a slmber party just happens to be taking place (do killers go anywhere else?). A group of unruly (more like DORKY) misfits are butchered one-by-one, but a hackneyed subplot pins SOME of the murderes on a jealous party-goer. Then add a twist ending that makes no sense (yes, a dream), angry parents and those cliched boyfriends who want in the party, and you have a real stink bomb.

There are lots of misconcieved set pieces and poor edits, but the main problem here is the sound and a general what the hell is going on here? feeling. An opening scene involving the teenagers leaving school cannot be heard, but it is fun to watch. This one is carried by most Blockbuster Videos. It's the worst film in their entire catalogue aside from Feeders. Definately has unintentional laughs.

The low point: When the doctor finds his daughter's friends buying beer, he forgets his monologue about orange juice and improvises a lot of nonsense.

The high point: The killer's eyes have more expression than any actor in this movie.
