Blood Diner

Sheetar...or was that SHITar?

"First they greet you, then the eat you."

Supposedly, this stinker was greenlighted as a sequel to Blood Feast. I didn't really see the connection - except both are really bad films. Of course, Hershell Gordon Lewis' classic had lower produciton values, making it a bit more entertaining.

Blood Diner opens with a terribly. Seems two brothers' poor Russian(!) uncle has gone off the deep end, almost like Michael Douglas in Falling Down, and is shot to death by the local authorities. Flash forward. Years later. The brothers have grown up - and decide it's now time to dig up their poor dead relative. Of course, it's a good thing the body's still perfectly intact, despite years of decay, or there wouldn't have been a movie. The remove their uncle's brain, complete with eyeballs(!?),and keep it in a jar. The brain then talks to them throughout the film (despite having no mouth). It seems it was all part of the master plan - to ressurect Sheetar - a Goddess of some sort.

Yes, the plot is inane, but it is handled rather tongue-in-cheek. The film's most entertaining moments come from the bad dubbing - which comes as rather interesting. The film is an American production with American actors. Why is everyone dubbed...so badly? This makes the Godzilla films look good by comparison. Maybe it was all part of the joke. Or, maybe they couldn't afford sound equipment on the set (this low-budgeter was shot on film).

Director Jackie Kong was responsible for Night Patrol, and 80's comedy, Police Academy rip-off, my friend tells me is ACTUALLY good. I'm beginning to have my doubts about my buddy's mental state.

The high point: Sheetar. The bitch has a plastic stomach with a mouth. Gotta love that.

The low point: The dubbing. Truly awful (though it is funny for the first 10 minutes).

The bottom line: Worth a look for Lewis fans. Others may want to avoid. It is incompitent at almost every level.

One final note: The lead brother reminded me A LOT of Norm McDolnald. From his looks to his dead-pan delivery. Now, that's CREEPY.
