I teach socratically by asking questions of the students and allowing them to follow their interests within the parameters of the subject being taught. I was homeschooled (see Growing Without Schooling magazine, a product of Holt associates) in this way and also recieved much of my mathematics instruction via the Moore Method. To get an idea of the style of mathematics I teach please visit the Mathnerds website where I am a volunteer tutor. Also, you can read Why Children Fail (a book by John Holt) or Dumbing Us Down (by John Taylor Gatto). I also carry this teaching philosophy into my yoga instruction where I try to tailor instruction to the individual without giving too many details on how correct technique would look. A familiar phrase in Ashtanga: "Practice and all is coming." In social dance, again, I try to allow the student to find the simplest way of leading or following through exercises as well as teaching "steps". Improvsitational skills are key no matter what area one studies. I believe that one learns by doing, whether it be mathematics, yoga, or dance. |
