Prague, Czech Republic
Prague was stop number two on our crazy tour of Europe and it was probably the destination we were most looking forward to. Jeremy and I have been dreaming of going to Prague for the last couple years and so to be there on my birthday was an amazing gift. The train into the Czech Republic was kind of unnerving because we understood absolutely nothing and were without a doubt the only Americans on our little train into increasingly desolate country side but we were up for the adventure and decidedly optimistic. We arrived in Prague at 9h00 in the evening and although the ATM mysteriously confiscated our bank card promptly after we arrived, we were determined to have a good time! The minute we ventured out from our hostel and hit the famous Old Town Square we were instantly shocked and so excited. Take a look at the pics surrounding this text box. . .the architecture made us feel like we were in a weird fairy tale world. You can check out the video clip of when we first saw Old Town Square by clicking here.
Left, right and below you can see some pictures of the Charles Bridge which links the historic Prague castle district with downtown. It is a major attraction not only because it offers awesome views while getting you from one side to the other but also because the pedestrian bridge is lined with artists and performers. We saw the most incredible opera singer there who was just singing her heart out, completey blind and reading the lyrics in braille. How cool is that? There are lots of sculptures along the way such as this one which was especially interesting because everyone kept lining up to touch it. But I guess we needed to take the tour to figure out why. . .oops.
Above left you can see the historic Prague castle from the opposite side of the river. We took a walk around the district and entered the castle walls which was pretty cool although there wasn't much to visit (at least not that we saw). It offers a lot of nice views however and is surrounded cute streets filled with artists and tempting restaurants. (Side note: I don't think we actually ate any real Czech food in Prague because we were so distracted by the fact that they had Mexican food which is not available in Marseille!) Above and to the left are pictures taken from the castle overlooking the river and bridge. It was a bit foggy because we were expecting snow (yeah!!). . .can you locate the bridge in the picture to the left? Yep. . .there it is!!
Haha! The ATM machine might have eaten my card but look who's sporting a 2000 Czech krown bill, huh? Yeah that's right. . .a 2000 bill. How cool is that? Okay so it was only worth like 20 euros but that's not the point. Dealing with Czech krowns felt like playing Monopoly. Who came up with these amounts? It's so much fun! Last but not least, to your right you can see our friend Liz and her brother Colm who was studying abroad in Prague and therefore our official tour guide. Good job Colm!
The band above was awesome. We actually bought their cd as a birthday present because they were so great. They were just planted in the middle of Old Town Square jamming away, singing in crazy voices and gathering a crowd. You can hear them on the Prague video by clicking here. Check out the colors on those buildings to the left! Liz said that it looked like Trading Spaces had been everywhere in Prague because it was so nicely painted.
