Munich, Germany
Munich was the first stop of many on our crazy Eurail trip through five countries and we decided to start it off right. We had arranged to spend one night and two days in this awesome city on our way to Prague since we had such a blast in Cologne. After an overnight train in a couchette and a few delays, we arrived in the evening of the first day which left us with only one option---beer hall! We found the famous "Hofbrauhaus" downtown and after setting ourselves up at one of the many wooden tables crowded with people, we ordered some "wieners" (hehe) and our first HUGE beers. I swear it hurt my wrist to lift my beer stein. The Hofbrauhaus is famous for it's very own "oompah band" (pictured below right) and the night was filled with everything you would expect---beer wenches, swaying, singing, wieners, and beer.
After befriending the people next to us at our wooden table (three Bulgarians and an American oddly enough), the beer hall closed before we were ready to end our night so we continued on with them to a late night bar. This involved an experience with the extremely confusing metro system (especially after a beer stein that size!) and a very long walk in the cold. By the time we arrived, the combination of beer and no sleep had kicked in and after a respectable amount of time we hunted down a taxi and somehow found our way back to our pension (which ended up to be in the red light district---not mentioned in the online description!). The next morning arrived way to soon but determined to see as much as possible before our train that afternoon, we set out with our backpacks and respective hangovers to see everything we could squeeze into our day. Munich is beautiful (even through sunglasses) and I stand by my assertion that of all the countries we have been to, Germans know how to have the most fun. Here are a few highlights from our crazy day of touring. . .
Above and right are a few shots of the famous "Marienplatz" which cuts through downtown Munich and is lined with fun stores and restaurants. There are little markets and lots of people everywhere.
Above and to the right are a few shots of a famous clock in downtown Munich with statues of dancing men and women that rotate and play music every hour on the hour. Lots of people crowd around to watch it although it is kind of anticlimactic because they just kind of spin around. Still neat to see though.
To the left you can see a nice shot of the Frauenkirche Dom (Cathedral) towers which proudly serve as Munich's chief city landmark. They are pretty impressive to see because it really sticks out among the rest of the architecture due to those gothic domed turrets which just kind of hover over everything. We thought the statues below were pretty random considering they were right in the middle of the Marienplatz and seemed kind of out of place but upon seeing a man dressed in a dog costume we later realized that the city was getting ready for Carnival or "Mardi Gras".
