'The names of all the stars, and of all living
things, and the whole history of Middle-Earth and Over-heaven and of the
Sundering Seas,' laughed Pippin. 'Of course! What less? But I am not in a hurry
tonight.'

The Handmaid of Gondor, by Nimrodel. i'll say this right now: i detest legolas romances, especially ones involving an original character. so, when i came across this story, i was pleasantly surprised to note that i did like it, quite a lot, in fact. ^_^ this is the story of a young woman's unrequited love for legolas, and it is beautifully done. (note also the three sequels, which are equally as captivating.) so this is a first for me, considering this is a legolas/oc story, but i will readily support it. It seemed an eternity to Elireth that she stood there, staring straight ahead, her heart still in her throat, but then she saw the servant of Dol Amroth with the silver swan at his breast enter the courtyard and, seeing her standing thus, make a slight bow and retreat. And so the two companions advanced unaccompanied towards her. Now that Elireth could see the Elf clearly, her breath was quite taken, for he walked with a grace and poise such as she had never seen before, and his eyes shone with a radiance that made her drop her own gaze to the ground.
Perchance to Dream, by M.N. Theis. a creepy creepy, yet amazingly detailed and brilliantly told story. this story takes place post-rotk, and shows the struggles of aragorn as king, and legolas in his position as aragorn's friend. an antagonistic kingdom begins to threaten gondor, and legolas is put in terrible danger because of it. it is one of the best lord of the rings fanfics i have ever read -- it is absolutely beautiful. it is also very long, and confusing at times, but it is always worth it. go. read. now. Legolas sighed. The conflict within always ended as thus, with this hope. He was needed. And if not, he needed them. It was enough for now to placate the anguish within his slowly tearing heart. He only feared the day when it would not be.
Variations on the Destruction of the Ring, by CNell. i tried very hard not to put this in, as it is very movie-based and just a humorous addition, not an actual story... but i just couldn't. it's too funny to leave out. much much too funny. i don't think i could bear having a lord of the rings recs page and not having this link on it. so, yeah. go read this, and be prepared to cry tears of laughter. [Author's Note: I deserve to be beaten for this, I really do.] Aragorn and his army stand before the Black Gate of Mordor. ARAGORN: Let the Lord of the Black Lands come forth! Let justice be done upon him! A guard pokes his head above the gate. GUARD: [in a heavy French accent] You don't frighten us, Gondor pig-dogs! Go and boil your bottom, sons of a silly person! I blow my nose at you, so-called Aragorn King, you and all your silly Gondor k-nnnnniggets! Pththththbt! Pthbt! Pthbt!
While the Ring went south, by Thundera Tiger. very much a book-themed story, and very interesting. it details the beginning of the fellowship's journey, and tells of all the difficulties they must have had (that tolkien didn't feel fit to write about himself, of course.) very paced, but never boring, and worth reading just for the squabbles between legolas and gilmi. (and, of course, much more, but the elf/dwarf fights are priceless.) this was also the very first lord of the rings fanfic i ever read, so the fact that it has stuck with me just goes to prove its worth. "My dear hobbit and dwarf," Legolas cried. The prince of Mirkwood knelt swiftly by Pippin’s side and helped him back to his feet, considerately dusting him off as he did so. "I thought I spied a bush and movement beyond. Alas, it was Gimli’s beard that I saw and his short stature behind it. Your pardon, please, Master Peregrin." "No harm done," Pippin stammered with a nervous glance at the wet, shivering dwarf. "You…you…" Not for the first time since the beginning of the journey, Gimli was at a complete loss for words. But this time, the dwarf remedied his speechlessness with action, and the son of Gloin leaped forward in a murderous rage with fists clenched tight.
The Mellon Chronicles, by Cassia & Siobhan. this entire series contains nearly twenty stories -- if not more, as i have lost count myself --, all of which are quite long, chock full of action, and all together very enjoyable. it starts with 'captive of darkness', and spirals out from there. the entire series chronicles legolas' and aragorn's adventures together, hence the 'mellon' (which means 'friend' in elvish.) if you have a couple of weeks to spare, i highly suggest reading this entire series. and i'm afraid that any quote i might put here couldn't possibly express the sheer enormity of this series, so... just take my word for it. (a warning, though: much elf/ranger torture. a lot. did i mention, tons of it? trust me.) the link brings you to cassia's fanfiction.net profile, under which all of the stories are kept.
To See A World, by Nightwing. when aragorn and legolas are investigating the gray mountains, they are attacked by orcs; legolas, unfortunately, is poisoned and blinded, and the two seek shelter in an (apparently) abandoned old house near a city. and the story develops from there, and it just keeps getting better. i am greatly endeared to this story -- the characterizations are impeccable, the plot is interesting, and it has a constant edge of tension. amazing read. The two friends had approached several of the villages, usually to be met at the perimeter by a stout group of defenders who regarded Aragorn with suspicion and Legolas with frank astonishment, and sometimes fear, but once introductions had been made and explanations given, the travelers were usually admitted and lodged comfortably. Usually, but more than once they had been told in no uncertain terms to clear off, narrowed eyes and unfriendly faces turned toward the elf, who would shrug, smiling good-naturedly and bowing with respect before following an irritated Aragorn back into the wild. "Superstitious, uneducated folk," the ranger had fumed after one such incident. He looked at his companion’s calm face. "You feel no anger? Then I shall feel it for you." Legolas raised a placating hand. "Peace, Aragorn. It is not such an odd thing that they fear the unfamiliar. It frustrates me, yes, but I shall continue to show them only friendliness and good manners. If I am to be the only elf they ever meet, I want to be remembered thus."
Hostage of Hate, by Littlefish. it is a very typical action/adventure story, which involves an evil villain after revenge, a certain gondorian king being its target, and many people caught in the middle. especially legolas. strong on the legolas torture/angst, and certainly a very familiar genre to those who know about most legolas fanfics. still, i recommend it -- it has its own flavor, and has a rather twisting, unique plot that i enjoyed quite a lot. He was half way to his destination when he suddenly felt a chill run up and down his spine. He halted in his tracks—grimacing slightly when Gimli ran into him from behind—and quickly glanced around him. “What is it?” Gimli demanded, his voice sounding slightly annoyed. “What is wrong?” Legolas slowly shook his head, his eyes still searching the busy street as he turned to face his friend. “I am not sure,” he admitted quietly. “I just got the sudden feeling that we are being watched, and the eyes are not friendly.”
The Hunting Trip, by Ithilien. yet another post-rotk story, and equally as amazing as the others i've mentiond. a bunch of people (including but not limited to aragorn, legolas, arwen, etc) decide to take a break from the stresses of (not-so) ordinary and take a hunting trip. unfortunately, this proves to be a dangerous mistake... and really, its much, much more interesting and dark and captivating than i would have you believe. i cannot describe how dark and strange this story is; i can only assure you that it is stupendous. read it. In the dark he saw the glade ahead, the outline of its form making a deeper shade against the pitch of midnight. He did his best to hurry his steps as salvation was there. Trees! If he could only make it to the trees. Aside from their knives, he did not think the Men carried other weapons. If he could make it to the trees, away from the dogs, he might escape. The forest was just ahead, and he forced all his energy into this last attempt to flee. He could hear his labored breath grow louder with his fatigue and his heart beat ever faster in his search for relief. Only a few hundred yards more did it stand. But in his blind pursuit to run, his senses were unfocused to all things but those behind him. He did not see the creature come at him from the sky until she was upon him.
Nine Men and A Little Lady, by Kielle. finally, a humor story. and a one-shot. ^_^; this is an amazingly hilarious story which satirizes all of the mary sue fanfic that have made their appearance since the movies were made. through journal entries, no less! absolutely brilliant. Galadriel's Journal Today the Fellowship moves on. A great evil passes from my domain, and a vast dank shadow lifts from the hearts of my people. Oh, and the One Ring is leaving, too.
