HISTORY
Pahang,
the largest state in Peninsular Malaysia, is endowed with a diverse
range of attractions. Nearly two-thirds of the state is enveloped in
verdant rainforest, making it a magnificent enclave of lush greenery,
exotic wildlife and an abundance of natural attractions.
Kuantan,
the administrative capital, is an interesting discovery of modern
buildings and charming cottage industries. Pahang’s majestic nature,
beautiful beaches, bustling townships, quaint villages, friendly
people, unique craft and delicious food make for mesmerising and
unforgettable vacations.
Choose to stay in campsites, hostels
and lodges for those who enjoy nature. Well-appointed resorts and
comfortable chalets are found on the islands. Pahang offers a variety
of Malay, Chinese, Indian and international cuisine. There are also
many fast food outlets, street stalls, cafes, restaurants and food
courts to choose from.
Archaeological
finds showed that the first human settlement in Pahang was probably at
the Tembiling River. Ancient Chinese records referred to Pahang as a
vassal of the Buddhist Sumatra-based Sri Vijaya empire from the 7th to
the 13th centuries. During the 15th to the 19th century, it was a
vassal state of the Melaka Empire and later of the Johor Riau Empire.
When
the latter collapsed, Bendahara Wan Ahmad of Pahang proclaimed himself
Sultan in 1882. In 1888, however, British imperialism manifested itself
in Pahang with an appointment of a British Resident. In 1896, it became
part of the Federated Malay States until the Japanese invasion. After
the war, it joined the Malayan Union and later the Federation of Malaya
which subsequently became independent
Malaysia in 1957

CULTURE
Batik
is a wax patterned cloth that is created primarilly in Indonesian
textile mills. It is mostly done in patterns including scenes from the
ocean, or with birds, flowers, butterflies, or some other plant or
animal pattern.
The process includes wax being put down on a
piece of fabric or paper, then applying dye to the pattern. Since the
wax will not allow the fabric below to absorb the dye, the batikers can
add the dye all the way throughout the fabric, and then steam off the
wax leaving some intriquite patterns.
A rule of thumb while
looking for batik patterns would be to look at how many colors and how
unique the pattern is... the more colors, the more expensive it is to
produce, so it should be more expensive!

Handicrafts If you are into handicrafts, Kampung Pandan along the alternative road from Kuantan to Kemaman, Terengganu is a-must-stop. Here, you will find an assortment of souvenirs made from woven pandan (pandanus) leaves.
Else, you may want to consider visiting Kampung Sungai Karang where you
can find other items like kites and handicrafts made from seashells. Brought
to the state by Bugis refugees fleeing the Dutch occupation of Makassar
in Indonesia during the 1700s, Pahang Silk is today weaved at the Tenun
Pahang DiRaja Development Centre in Kampung Sungai Soi near Kuantan and
Pulau Keladi in Pekan. At these centres, you get a chance to watch the
actual silk weaving process, unique of Kampung Mengkasar in Pekan,
where the Malays of the Bugis descendant refined their art over four
centuries.
Batik
printing cottages can be found at Kampung Beserah and Tanah Putih.
Apart from watching the printing or painting process, you could try
your hand at designing your very own batik.
