The Ordinary of the Day
© 1999 Clifton D. HealyThey are gods, the two of them
Divinity hidden in the flesh
Of a welder and housewife
Their destiny writ large
On the backdrop of eternity
Engraved on wrists and feet and side
But most days they don't know itTheir love is world-making stuff
With three kids, a boy and two girls
Powerful, creative
Part of the word which spoke the universe
And made the rain
Gentle as a mother's kiss
And a father's prayer
But most days they don't know itTheirs is a love
Like whispering spider webs in the wind
Thin strands of white heat
Scarring hands grasping electric fire
Hurting and unable to let go
A love that burns and sometimes crushes
Beneath a weight of glory
Creatures of unseen majesty
Aching with hidden grandeur
