Lesson 1

Interstate 4 One Another

“Traveling Together”

The Point of the Lesson:

God did not make us to be alone. He created us to live and learn with other believers. He wants us to get along and work together, even though we are all different.

The Power of God’s Word:

Make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one heart and purpose. Philippians 2:2 NLT

The Prayer of Each Child:

Dear Jesus, Thank you for making me and everyone around me. I pray that you will help me appreciate the people you have put in my life. Help me to learn your ways and live in harmony with others as I do your will. Guide me to choose a wise friend that I can grow with, learn with, and care about as we travel through life together. Help me to write down and remember one way I can get along with others.

Prepare: (Before service)

4 suitcases or duffle bags (1 for object lesson, 4 for the game)

4 of each: toothbrush, shoe, hat, bar of soap, pajama top

Regular size license plate

Giveaway verse license plate

Preview: (5 minutes)

Welcome from MC:

Who likes to travel? For the next few weeks we’re going to follow the interstate and see where God’s Word takes us. This is going to be fun! I just hope everybody gets along. There’s going to be a lot of togetherness on this trip.

Object Lesson:

(Hold up a suitcase or duffle bag) My bag here is ready to go. Every time I go on a trip I want to get cool souvenirs. (Pull out a regular size license plate) These might be a little hard to keep all in my bag, but these (hold up giveaways) will work great. Just by coming every week for this series, you can get a different verse plate to collect, too.

Kid Connect Question:

Would you rather travel in a camper or in a train?

Play: (5 minutes)

Under/Over

Place a duffle bag by each team. The teams will pass the five items (toothbrush, soap, hat, pajama top, and shoe) along the row, alternating over the head and through the legs of each person. The last person in the row will place the item in the other duffle bag. The team to get all the items in the bag – and do it correctly – and bring them up to the MC first, wins.

Transition for MC:

Okay, I think we’re ready to go. Soon it will be time to find out how we’re starting off. If I know God, I’m sure He has a plan for each one of us.

Lesson in a Word: Together

What Should I See?

Jesus journeyed to Galilee, preaching about the kingdom of God. One day, as Jesus was out walking by the sea, He saw two brothers fishing. Their names were Simon and Andrew. Jesus asked the brothers to follow Him. He said He would make them fishers of people. They immediately put down their nets and followed Jesus. As He continued on, Jesus saw two more brothers: James and John. They were with their father, Zebedee, fixing their nets. Jesus called to them, and they immediately left their father and their boat to follow Jesus. (Source: Matthew 4:18-22)

Memory Verse:

Make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one heart and purpose. Philippians 2:2 NLT

What’s The Key?

God made us to be with other people. We go through life together with family, neighbors, and friends. It is God’s plan for us to get along and work together.

What’s That To Me?

God has put many different people in our lives. Even though we have differences, we can all be part of His family. We can choose to live God’s way and help those around us do the same.

How Should I Be?

We can try hard to get along with others in our life journey. We can choose not to argue or fight with others in our family. We can stand up for our friends when someone says mean things about them.

Practice Point:

Let’s travel together and choose to start,

get along with others with one purpose and heart.

TEAM TIMEOUT

This time is spent together in small groups using the student handouts.

Things To Do Here:

Question 1: Why does God want us to be with people?

Question 2: How can we work together with others to do God’s will?

Question 3: How can we choose wise people to travel through life with?

Things To Do At Home:

Question 1: Ask your mom or dad this question – Who has helped you learn                         about God?

Question 2: Look up Philippians 2:3 to find out how we should think of others.

Question 3: Think of a wise friend you want to learn and grow with. List two ways                                  that you can follow God together. Check them off when you do them.                  (Examples: read the Bible together, come to church together, listen                        to Christian music together, etc...)

Memory Madness

Each team participates in their group trying to recite the week’s verse with the hand motions. Make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one heart and purpose.
