Las Mujeres Bonitas

Spanish Colonial women in early Nuevo Mxico wore clothes similar to what is now seen in regional, traditional clothing in present day Spain. Here are some photos from the fallas de Valencia and some other examples of clothing which could have been worn by our Spanish Colonial mujeres.

Remember that our Spanish Colonial ancestors did not seek a new civilization in Nuevo Mxico, but sought to bring their Spanish civilization with them to the new world.

Precious family heirloom jewelry added a touch of elegance to the Spanish Colonial women.

Fans, hair combs, mantillas, lace, colorful skirts and the traditional hair braiding styles made up the typical outfits worn by our antepasadas.

A California Soldier's Wife circa 1791: She wears an enagua or transparent muslin skirt and pearls from Baja California, a tight-fitting silk blouse joins the skirt. The shoes, zapatos de patillo, had a high, wooden heel. A silk rebozo or shawl was also worn.
