It will never be a question of how life will be for us.
As it is, what we have with each other
Is something that cannot be
just forgotten.
She took me in when I was
Wrapped in the bleackness
Of having lost a friend.
After that, we hit it off pretty well
Actually, so well that we lasted
Through all of six years.
Humor was never a problem
for there were enough of those
hilarious disasters
that could make our stomachs ache
for hours on end.
I, for one, can't really see myself
as having the stuff
winners are made of
But she tells me this
over and over
until I have begun to believe
that perhaps, I do have some of them.
Boredom has never stepped into
our conversations
because she would always have
new ideas
about those old, seemingly ordinary things.
Tearjerkers, to me
are people's tragedies
while to her
these are the cruel fates
of lone cats and dogs.
Contrast always makes
for an interesting relationship.
As for boys, we both were not mushy people
so talk about them was seldom.
However, secrets had to be revealed
sooner or later
because being what we are to each other
there was no room for hiding.
The other would know about it
one way or the other.
Those times when I felt as if
I had the whole world on my shoulders
she, in her own unique way
would try to lift a portion of it
with her fingers
until it weighed no greater
than a tennis ball.
All those, you see, would tell you
that what we are to each other
can never be questioned
for if it was able to go
this far
surely it will last through
time and distance
My belief that we can
overcome anything
will stand strong
because we are
and will always be
BEST FRIENDS.
* She gave this poem to me after my recollection--way back in first year college. It is one of best poems I've ever read...
