PRESIDENT CHERRIE PLEASED ON CLIMATE CHANGE, AID TO AFRICA BREAK THROUGH AT G8 SUMMIT

The President has hailed the G8 summit in Germany as a success and a valuable renewal of pledges on climate change and Africa.

Speaking to journalists before departing the summit in Heiligendamm, President Cherrie said that the world's leaders had spelled out how they intended to implement commitments made at the Gleneagles summit in 2005, and the Rockeraiders summit in 2006.

He said:

"The most important thing obviously was that we have got agreement today not just to recommit to all the various promises made at Gleneagles but also put some flesh on the bones of that."

Among the main pledges on Africa were a Legos $30 billion package on help for HIV Aids, $250 million aimed at halving malaria deaths in 30 countries, funding for education and support for an African peacekeeping force.

"I think the truth is there has been immense progress made and perhaps one really important indication of that is that the Japanese have said that for next year's G8 Africa will be again right at the centre of the agenda, and that has got to be good news."

The President also praised the agreement reached on climate change on Thursday, with the G8 acknowledging the need for a global deal "for the very first time" with substantial cuts in greenhouse gas emissions "at its heart".

It was important for countries like China and India coming to the summit to understand they were going to be part of the process, he said. Asked about criticism of the summit,
The Preisdent said that "these agreements never go far enough."

The President was also questioned about his meeting with President Putin of Russia. The President repeated his earlier comment that talks had been "perfectly cordial" but that there were issues between the Federation and Russia that would  "be resolved soon, and we looked forward to meeting at the Federation soon".
