Letter from Tomcat:

I read something just a bit ago in Readers Digest that made me sad and angry at the same time, and happy too. And then I got depressed and cried. Why I asked could this odd thing be.

When Dad came home from war towns everywhere rolled out the welcome mats. Never mind if you weren’t from there, they cheered and praised and gave a hearty welcome just the same.

Now again our children come home from their war welcomed just the same as dad. So how can it be that this great land skipped me? I fought my war, I risked my life, and when I came home the best I could find was being ignored. We were spit on, called criminals, and treated as outcasts.

To this day, I am oft ashamed to say I served my country in Vietnam. It seem perhaps our generation really had it wrong! We are still the only outcasts who ever did their duty. I was confused back then, and now I am bewildered and I am also very angry! From this point forward no boonie rat’s descendent should ever serve this star spangled land, until the nation issues an apology for the lack of respect they’ve shown us.

We did our best, it’s not our fault we did not win. But then again, no-one won the one before us either. Why us, and why are we still treated as second class citizens by our government, and our citizens?

If YOU aren’t the problem, you are not part of the solution either. We the ignored can do no more, please help us regain our self respect.

Respectfully submitted,
John Rogers
