MY EYE OPERATIONIn 1976 I developed an ocular occulsion (a blood clot) in the pupil of my left eye. My opthomologist prescribed aspirin to dissolve the clot. However the aspirin caused the clot to leak and it had to be Lasared by a Retinal Specialist. This procedure caused me to lose a good portion of my sight and hastened my retirement as an Electronic Technician from the Port Authority. Afterward from time to time I would get little bleeds from new forming veins but they would get absorbed in a day or two. However late last year this last bleeder would not go away. After 2 weeks of not being able to see I went and saw the same Retinal Specialist that did the original job. The only way he could see the interior of my eye was by a sonic gram because light could not penetrate the opaqueness. The sonic gram showed my eye was full of blood and fluid due to a bleeder that was between the macula and the retina and therefore could not be absorbed. This problem could not be Lasared away because of the fluid so an operation would be necessary. The operation was scheduled for a Tuesday because the hospital I was going to had the doctor working in the morning. I was scheduled for 8AM but because of a foul up I was moved up to 10AM. I was told I could not have anything to eat or drink after midnight of the day I was supposed to be operated on. The hospital van picked me up at 9AM and I arrived and was checked in ready for the operation at a few minutes before 10AM. Then I waited until 2PM because the person in front of me developed complications. Finally I was wheeled in and prepped for the operation. The operation consisted of making a hole in the corner of my eye (so as not to break the lens) and sucking out the blood and fluid while lasering the vein. This was done under a local anesthesia so I was awake for the whole procedure. Everything went smoothly and I healed nicely. I am hoping that this is the last time I will ever have this trouble.
