A limited edition version omitted "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss)". It came with tarot cards, each one pertaining to one of the album's 11 songs and containing lyrics and credits, in a velum sleeve. The CD is a picture disc that also comes in a velum sleeve, packaged in a balsa wood box with a foil-stamped Cher logo on the front.

Judging from initial radio and sales reaction to fun first single "Love & Understanding," media icon's third Geffen set should maintain recent pop chart resurgence. With a few exceptions, overall musical direction is more straight-forward rock'n'roll this time, which is the perfect environment for her unique vocal style. Material here is among the strongest she's performed in years, with highlights including the aggressive (and logical next single) "Save Up All Your Tears" and thunderous ballad "I'll Never Stop Loving You."

When the world last heard Cher's instantly recognizable warbling, it was in the role of a swaggering faux metal mama. She opens a promising new chapter in her long and winding recording career on a softer, often sullen rhythm pop note, revealing vibrant and previously unheard colors of her voice. And while it might be difficult for some to separate the infomercial hawker from the artist, there is no denying her successful diva stretch on Trevor Horn's gloriously bombastic production of the Walker Bros. evergreen "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine (Anymore)" or her surprisingly soulful falsetto on the set's charming first single, "One By One."

It's not the best-known fact of Cher's long and winding career, but in 1973 she cut an album of love songs titled "Bittersweet White Light." Produced by her then husband Sonny Bono, it featured some songs she sang on "The Sonny And Cher Show," including "The Man I Love," "What'll I Do," and a medley of Al Jolson tunes: "Sonny Boy," "My Mammy," and "Rock-A-Bye Your Baby With A Dixie Melody." The record made a paltry showing on the charts, disappeared from the radar, and was never reissued on CD in the U.S. until now. Even though much of it is schmaltzy and better versions of its songs exist elsewhere, this re-release couldn't be better timed, given Cher's recent resurgence as a pop/dance diva. Also, with more than 25 years of distance, "Bittersweet" has taken on a nostalgic glow. The CD reissue has been retitled to reflect its bonus tracks, which are culled from Cher's four other MCA records from the mid-'70s, including the gold-certified album "Half-Breed." A labor of love by catalog specialist Andy McKaie and Universal Music and Video Distribution marketing director Mike Khouri, who got into the music business because of his zeal for Cher.
