Two scores are needed to compute a league handicap.
The column labelled "Rds" is the number of Census 9-hole league rounds the player has played this year.
The column labelled "Index" is a nine-hole handicap index. Clicking on a player's index who has an established Census 9-hole league index will display all score/course rating/slope rating/posting-date information for that player.
The column labelled "Δ yr" is change from last year's handicap index. (The All-Time most-improved is Stacey Jordan with an incredible -8.9!)
The column labelled "Δ wk" is change from last week's handicap index. An "!" indicates the player didn't play last week.
The column labelled "Front Hcp" is a nine-hole match handicap for the front nine of Enterprise Golf Course.
The column labelled "Back Hcp" is a nine-hole match handicap for the back nine of Enterprise Golf Course.
The handicap is computed from the 10 most-recent scores.
- 2-3 scores use the best handicap differential for computation.
- 4-5 scores use the best two handicap differentials for computation.
- 6-7 scores use the best three handicap differentials for computation.
- 8-9 scores use the best four handicap differentials for computation.
- 10 scores use the best five handicap differentials for computation.
The columns labelled "1" through "10" are adjusted nine-hole scores. The most-recent is in the "1" column.
A name with a light blue background indicates that the player is a man.
A name with a pink background indicates that the player is a woman.
A score with an orange background indicates that its handicap differential was used to compute the handicap index.
The maximum men's nine-hole handicap index is 18.2.
The maximum women's nine-hole handicap index is 20.2.
An "*" indicates that the handicap index has been truncated due to the maximum.
A "#" indicates that the league index and course handicaps have been computed from the Census Golf Club handicap index because the player doesn't have two league scores.

COURSE RATING ADJUSTMENTS

The course rating adjustments are reflected in the columns labelled "Front Hcp" and "Back Hcp." These are match handicaps and are valid whether playing a man or a woman. An additional stroke has been added to the women on the front nine. An additional stroke has been added to the men on the back nine.

If You're Playing a Match at a Course Other Than Enterprise

Ask in the pro shop what the slope and course ratings are for the nine holes that you will be playing or go to this website: golfnet.com (it covers Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida).
If that information isn't available, use the slope/course ratings for the entire eighteen holes.
Use your 9-hole league handicap index to determine your course handicap by looking on an index-to-course-handicap conversion table (here's a link to all the possible slopes). Or get out your calculator and do the math. The formula is: chcp=nint(ind x slope ÷ 113), where:
- ind is your 9-hole handicap index.
- slope is the slope rating of the course you're playing.
- nint is an operation that rounds to the nearest whole number.
- chcp is your course handicap.
Now adjust for any differences in course ratings (different sets of tees being played).
- If you weren't able to get course ratings for the nine that you are playing, divide the 18-hole course rating by 2.
- Subtract the low from the high.
- Round to the next whole number.
- Add the resulting strokes to the person(s) playing the higher rated tees.

How to Adjust Your Gross Score for Handicapping Purposes

Look up your course handicap on the chart titled "EQUITABLE STROKE CONTROL." (NOTE: Your course handicap is not the same as your match handicap. Women should subtract 1 stroke from their match handicap if they played the front nine and men should subtract one stroke from their match handicap if they played the back nine.
Go through your hole-by-hole score and reduce any score that exceeds the maximum to the maximum.
Your nine-hole score that has gone through Equitable Stroke Control is known as your adjusted score and is to be reported for handicapping purposes.

Reminder!

The USGA Handicap System states:

5-1. a. Scores To Post

A golfer shall post a score when he plays an 18-hole
round, 13 or more holes, or consecutive nine-hole
rounds.

Therefore, if you've played two league matches with no other intervening round, it's your responsibilty to post your adjusted score to Golfnet (or wherever you maintain your handicap) for regular handicap purposes.

How to Report Consecutive Nine-Hole Scores

Add the two adjusted nine-hole scores together.
Add the two course ratings together.
Average the slope ratings (.5 rounds to the next whole number).
Report the score to Golfnet (or wherever you maintain your handicap).

Examples:

Charlie Moon shoots a 45 on the front nine on Tuesday, May 7, 2007, and a 44 on the front nine on Tuesday, May 14, 2007, without playing an intervening round. He would report an 18-hole score thusly: 89/69.2/118 on 5/14/2007.
Charlie Moon shoots a 45 on the front nine on Tuesday, May 21, 2007, and a 50 on the back nine on Tuesday, May 28, 2007, without playing an intervening round. He would report an 18-hole score thusly: 95/68.8/118 on 5/28/2007.

How to Report Incomplete Nine-Hole Scores

At least seven holes must be played to report a score for handicap purposes.
Adjust the scores for the played holes using Equitable Stroke Control.
Scores for unplayed holes must be recorded as par plus any handicap strokes that the player is entitled to receive on the unplayed holes.
Example: A player with a Course Handicap of 15 stops playing after 7 holes because of darkness. Hole 8 is a par 3 and is the number 9 handicap-stroke hole for that nine. The player will record 3 (par) plus 1 handicap stroke for an X-4 on hole 8. Hole 9 is a par 4 and is the number 4 handicap-stroke hole for that nine. The player will record 4 (par) plus 2 handicap strokes for an X-6 on hole 9.
