Who We Are
We are Charlie and
Carole Montemayor from Madison, Wisconsin. We moved to Guanajuato in
1995. We have two grown children...a daughter, Jenny, and a son,
Nate, who live in the Madison area. Many people have asked us how we
came to live in Mexico and Guanajuato in particular. When people
from Wisconsin come to visit Mexico they usually come here in the
winter to thaw out and soak up the sun on the ocean beaches. We are
not particularly fond of hot weather and commercial tourist areas,
so when we first came here we visited the Spanish colonial cities of
the central highlands of Mexico: Morelia, Patzquaro, Zacatecas, San
Miguell de Allende, Queretero and Guanajuato. We fell in love with
Guanajuato.
It was in the patio of the Quinta Loreto Hotel in San Miguel that
Carole asked me when would it be possible for her to retire so that
we could move to Mexico. I told her that I thought she could retire whenever she wanted, but if
what she wanted to know is how we would fare financially if we moved
here, I would work up a spread sheet on the computer and see how things worked. For Christmas that year, I prepared a report titled, Feasibility of Carole Montemayor Retiring Early in the Country of Mexico. In addition to the financial aspects, the report looked at how this move might affect our kids, the climate, health care, cost of living, airline connections so our children and friends could visit and we could visit them, and other factors. Carole and I had lived in the same house in Madison for over thirty years and were not what you would call transient people. The report proposed that we try living in Guanajuato for six months to see if we liked it. One firm provision of the report was that we would not move to Mexico unless we both favored it. Twelve years later we're still here and we love it.
