The preserve is owned in common by the local Indians. Some of them find work in the preserve while others make their living by selling curios and food to the visitors.

While some preservationists want no visitors in the area, the Indians who own the land need the income and seem to be quite aware that they must preserve the fragile eco-system if they are to have an income in the future.
