Guanajuato's Tunnels
Guanajuato has a system, more like a labyrinth, of tunnels that make possible vehicular circulation below the ground connecting various parts of the city. Above ground are a few thoroughfares, usually one lane, one way streets, and a maze of callejones, which are narrow pedestrian passageways that connect houses and buildings to the precious few thoroughfares.
The picture on the right is actually not exactly a tunnel, but rather the Subterania Hidalgo, which is a subsurface roadway built on an old riverbed, the river having been diverted into a large tube after a disastrous flood in 1905. A number of tunnels connect the Subterania with other tunnels and parts of the city. |
