Guanajuato's Tunnels

Subterania Guanajuato has a system, more like a labyrinth, of tunnels that make possible vehicular circulation below the ground connecting various parts of the city. Above ground are a few thoroughfares, usually one lane, one way streets, and a maze of callejones, which are narrow pedestrian passageways that connect houses and buildings to the precious few thoroughfares.

The picture on the right is actually not exactly a tunnel, but rather the Subterania Hidalgo, which is a subsurface roadway built on an old riverbed, the river having been diverted into a large tube after a disastrous flood in 1905. A number of tunnels connect the Subterania with other tunnels and parts of the city.

Tunnel Every year the city continues to build more tunnels. The picture on the left is the Aguilar Tunnel that bypasses El Centro .
