Construction began on the Teatro Juarez in 1873 and the building was completed in 1903. The top of the facade of the theater is graced by statues of the nine Muses, only six of which are visible straight on as in this picture. The portico displays Doric columns and the interior is lavishly decorated. The teatro was built at a time that Guanajuato was enjoying great wealth. The opening performance was the opera Aida and was attended by President Porfirio Diaz.
