Guanajuato is a city of legends. One of the most enduring is the story of the daughter of a rich Spanish mine owner and the son of a poor miner. The two were in love and living across the callejon from each other in houses so close that they could touch, they would reach across and kiss each other from their balconies. The rich Spanish mine owner forbade his daughter to see the poor miner's son and when he discovered that they were carrying on he had her killed, that being the custom in those days. Today you can see the narrow callejon, and the house where this took place and for a few pesos hear the complete tale in Spanish from young boys who tell the story with real fervor and passion.
