GLOBAL SITUATION

The Chart Polski in Poland and outside of Poland

The Chart Polski today –

some facts about the current situation

e  In Poland the concept 'Chart Polski' has two senses. It means a) purebred and registered Chart Polski with pedigree, but also it is b) common name of various local sighthound mixes that are not purebred or registered and have not pedigree. Often the animal rescue people calling captured countryside stray dogs as Chart Polski, if they are sighthound-looking, shorthaired and don't seem to be some other breed. These two separate senses are important to understand, when speaking about the Chart Polski.

When calculating the quantity of the Chart Polski in the world, naturally only registered and living (=suitable for breeding) Chart Polski individuals can be taken into consideration.

e  As far as the world wide number of the Chart Polski individuals is concerned, any "official" estimates are not published anywhere, but those numbers are possible to calculate. See the page LITTERS.

e  Chart Polski breed has spread to these countries outside of Poland: Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland and United States.

e  The yearly number of the registered Chart Polski litters of the world has developed during the last four decaces like this:

1970–1979: 0,2 litters / year

1980–1989: 4 litters / year

1990–1999: 8 litters / year

2000–2008: 9 litters / year.

These numbers are only approximate, because all information about the litters in some countries is not exact (especially in 1990–1999).

Chart Polski global problems

e  Lack of the organizations and organized function for the interest of the breed. In this situation there necessarily should be strong organizational activities for support the breeding. There must be a neutral quarter, that looking after the Chart Polski interest: collecting and sharing information and organizing examination, inquiries and compiling statistics.

e  Language barrier. Very roughly estimated 40 % of registered Chart Polski population lives outside of Poland, but foreign Chart Polski people don't understand Polish language. However there in Poland are a lot of important information concerning the breed – for example texts, that are published in polish and never translated to the international languages. Observation the developement of the breed in its country of origin – it is very hard. The world wide Chart Polski population is still very small, so people can not be isolated or limit and localize the activity only in home countries.

e  Lack of information. There are very few printed publications or newspapers and any bulletins or annuals, where people could get topical information about the breed. Also there are very few impartial (non-profit) websites related to the Chart Polski. Most of the breed information are published in the websites, that have private status: they are maintained by a private person or kennel. Also often the information going by rumours and is ambiguous and unreliable.

It is always better, if the flow of information was effective and shared equally to all Chart Polski breeders and owners.

e  Lack of examination and control. For example any statistics about the health of the breed not exist. A few dogs has took part in a few health examinations, but that is not enough. Many people don't know, what is the real present situation in the Chart Polski health.

e  Lack of volunteer workforce. There must be much more people, who are ready to work unselfishly for the breed: especially translators, but also association activists, editors, spokesmen, public relation officers, local contact persons...
