Chapter One: Quiet Skies and Trouble Afoot

The Chxalli island had been strangely quiet for the past few weeks... and despite the fact that Iris liked to think that she enjoyed the bit of calm, it was bothering her. It wasn't just that she didn't have much of anything to do, it was that it just wasn't fair that she had been left here while everyone else seemed to be out bonding or frenzying... or going on some sort of adventure. Iris knew that she was just too good to be sitting around the island doing nothing.

Perhaps, she thought to herself as she sunned herself out in one of the many gardens, she would return to MonFiamma for some fun. Nin'Queesha wouldn't agree, but there was just something about that place that had always appealed to Iris. She was a far cry from being a native, at least in the sense of being at home amid the fiery rivers and black mountains, but her heart had always been a part of that savage world. It would be nice to bask in some real heat, but vacationing on MonFiamma just wasn't the sort of thing that Iris had in mind. After all, what would Icallan say to her? He was off bonding... and really, it was rather sad that Iris hadn't bonded first- she was so much more deserving. It wasn't so bad though- she just didn't even feel quite ready to bond yet. Afterall, Iris still didn't know the path that she would choose for her life and didn't want to give her bond the impression that she was truly as aimless as she felt. It was just, nothing felt right.

Iris let out a deep sigh and settled her head into her paws. She had always seen herself as one of the best dragons of the Chxalli clan, always believed it with all her heart, but her uncertainty certainly didn't make her feel that way right now. Most of her friends knew what they wanted to do, knew how they were going to get there... why couldn't she do the same? Where was her passion?

The pensive dragoness was falling into something of a slumber when a shadow fell over her. Begrudging this breech of her private time, Iris lifted her head slowly to regard her caller. It was none other than Ghwen Ake Asant, one of Iris' closest friends. Iris sat up stiffly, glancing about herself before offering Ghwen a questioning look. It was not right that she had come here... it was dangerous for both of them.

"What are you doing here?" Iris demanded, knowing that Ghwen was full aware of the possible dangers of her coming. The Ake Asant clan and Chxalli clan had long been at stressed odds, with Nin'Queesha and Pree constantly at eachothers throats. Nin'Queesha reserved her judgments in most cases, being civil and even loving to as many as she could, but Pree and her children had long ago fell out of the Bre'Ama's good graces. There were a strange exception, and Queesha's emotions were so strongly against the Ake ASants that an unspoken rule of separation had formed between the two families. Iris and Ghwen should never have become friends... and Ghwen shouldn't have come. The island may have seemed quiet, but the chances of some kind of traffic was always high. Someone would see them.

"I came to get you," Ghwen said simply, her eyes twinkling impishly down at Iris.

"Are you insasne?" Iris hissed angrily. "You are going to get yourself beat for coming here."

"Not if you hurry," Ghwen snapped, annoyed that her friend lacked any appreciation for what she had done for her. "Come on! "

"Maybe if I knew what you were talking about," Iris finally got to her feet, more angry than before. Ghwen was being out right stupid and pushy to boot. What did she expect? That Iris would just jump up, not knowing a thing, and go with her? Ha. Ghwen looked exasperated but knew Iris too well to think that her friend would come without an explanation... especially now that she had worked herself into a state.

"I stole my grandmother's ship," Ghwen began but couldn't go on. Iris was staring so harshly at her that the words died on her tongue.

"You did what?" She asked.

"Look," Ghwen said hotly. "Pree has been..." Ghwen stopped, thinking that perhaps she didn't want to tell Iris what the real problem was.

"Pree is what?" Iris pressed impatiently, again glancing around for any signs of someone approaching.

"I am just bored out of my mind," Ghwen started again, "And I know that you are too... you were practically broadcasting the fact over the whole Co'ana." Iris felt her skin burn with indignation, realizing that she just might have let her mental guard down during her doze.

"This is our chance for an adventure!" Ghwen said suddenly, forcing some kind of happiness into her voice... though she was desperate for haste now. "Please come with me, Iris. Just think of it." The two regarded eachother for a moment and then Iris trotted past Ghwen, head held high, tail proudly displayed. Ghwen smiled lightly and caught up to her friend, taking the silent agreement for what it was. Iris may have been a pistol, but she was a good friend when it came down to it... she knew when she was needed...
