Most scientists today believe that plants evolved from green algae. This eukaroytic protist, however, first evolved from prokaryotic cells. Invaginations of the membrane formed the nuclear membrane and the endoplasmic reticulum and endosymbiosis formed mitochondria and chloroplasts.
