In an old Victorian style house in San Francisco, Prue , Piper and Phoebe Halliwell came to live with their grandmother (Grams) because their father left them and their mother died. The three sisters moved away from Grams house. Prue and Piper moved back when Grams became ill. Phoebe moved to New York to try her luck at "The Big Apple". While Piper was visiting Grams in the hopital she met Jeremy a young attractive man who she started to date. When Grams dies Phoebe tells Piper she is going to live with her and Prue in the house Grams left them.  Phoebe had originally seperated from them because she had an affair with Prues boyfriend. So when Prue sees Phoebe on their door step with all her lugage Prue isn't to thrilled. Phoebe claimed her old room and moved back in. This was the first time the three had been together since Grams death.
On a storm night Phoebe goes exploring the house since it brings back so many memories. When the power goes out Phoebe notices the attic door is locked. She  and Piper try and unlock it while Prue trys to get the lights back on. When the light is on Phoebe is allredy startiung to explor the attic. Phoebe finds and old chest with only as few things and a larg book intitled "The Book Of Shadows". When Prue and Piper go to bed Phoebe stayes up to read the book.
The next morning Prue and Piper are off to work and Phoebe sleeps in. Prue gets fired by her boss and ex-boyfriend who was very jealouse of  Prues seccess. Piper goes to the "Quake". A local reastraunt where Piper is aplying for a job. Piper cooks up a great dish for the chef and doesn't have time to put in her secret ingredient, a few drops of wine. Frustrated Piper rasise her arms to stop him, she does she freezes him. Not knowing what happened Piper quickley puts a few drops of wine into her dish. Just as she gets back in to position the chef unfreezes. He tastes her dish and loves it. He imediatly hires Piper. While this is going on Pheobe has a premanition or a vision into the future. She sees the indication worked and that she has magical powers. She imediatly rushes to the Quake, were she meets Prue. Prue and Piper sat at the bar with Phoebe as Phoebe explains that the three of them are now witches thanks to the indication. The book said that they had decended from a long line of witches and not just witches very powerful witches. The book goes on to say that if in the Halliwell family three sisters are born they are to posses  the strongest powers and become the most powerful witches in the world. Thesse powers are given to protect the innocent and stop those who abuse the powers of magic and evil beings. Prue doesn't belive this so Phoebe makes Prue so mad that Prue moves an ashtray with her mind. Phoebe explains that the powers have been divided into three so they each get one. Phoebe got the power of premanition or visions into the past and future. Prue has the power of Telekinesis or the ability to move ojects with her mind. Piper has the power to freeze time......
