Marie gritted her teeth as the car she was in swerved around another tight corner. The family SUV was equipped with quite a plush interior, but her posterior was beginning to feel incredibly bruised from the constant adjustments she had to make with every crazy turn. She braced herself against her door, as the car took another corner, and bit her lip in frustration, determined not to say anything, knowing how much she herself hated back-seat drivers. She looked forward and saw that Zane’s eyes were fixed on the road, looking for the next turn-off. A moment later he spotted it, pointed it out, and spoke quickly to Tyler, who was the one driving the car in such a way that Marie had felt she had lost her stomach before they had even left the Mansion back at Westchester. "Okay, turn left up here. And can you step on the gas a little?" Marie caught a quick glimpse of Tyler’s frazzled expression in the rear-view mirror, and quickly braced herself again as he took the turn. She swallowed a scream as a taxi suddenly swerved into view, and they missed a collision by bare inches. She closed her eyes, thankful to whatever Gods watching over them right now, barely hearing the honk of the taxi’s horn. Her own frazzled nerves too close to the edge, she leant forward and smacked Tyler on the shoulder, "Off the gas! Off the gas!" She leant back and saw the expression Tyler shot her in the rear-view mirror, before speaking in a terse tone, his annoyance apparent, "Does somebody else want to drive here?" Ignoring Tyler’s remark, Zane turned back to look at Marie, impatience the dominant expression on his handsome, but tired looking face, "Marie, the demon is not going to wait around for us to come and vanquish him." Marie resisted the urge to roll her eyes. "But we don't even know if we have enough power to vanquish him," she reminded him, turning away and looking out of her window. "Scrying for random evil tells us nothing." Zane didn’t let his point down easily, "It tells us where the demons are and since we vanquished two already this week, I’d say it's working pretty well." His expression remained the same, but Marie heard the resolution in the tone that he used. She had a feeling no matter what she said it wouldn’t matter, but she gave it a go anyway, "Yeah, thanks to Tyler and Zoe for saving our butts. One witch; one half-mutant-witch; one half-witch, half Whitelighter; and whatever Tyler is isn’t the Power of Three to make." Tyler turned to look at her, slightly surprised, but Marie didn’t let him talk before she berated him, "Eyes on the road, eyes on the road!" She nearly yelled, before sitting back, "You know what I mean, Tyler." Nodding matter-of-factly, Tyler went back to concentrating on the road, as Zane angrily carried on, "So what are we supposed to do? Just sit around and wait for them to pick us all off? If we weren't going after them, they'd be coming after us." Marie could not ignore the truth in Zane’s words, but Tyler’s only reinforced it. "They're coming after you anyway, Zane. With Glory gone, the Source is coming after you." Marie winced at the mention of the thankfully vanquished Hell-God, who was once Tyler’s alter ego, and the reason that Zack, her cousin and Zane’s brother, had died, sacrificing himself to save the life of his love, Kitty Pryde. The wounds were still fresh, especially for Tyler himself, who now had to deal with the fragmented memories of what Glory had been responsible for, and Zane – who was still at a loss of what to do. "But we won't be ready for him because instead of teaching Zoe how to be a witch, we're out hunting for every Tom, Dick and Beelzebub in New York State." Mentioning Zoe, her cousin and a sister to Zack and Zane that no-one knew had existed until a week ago, was still a strange experience, and she saw the light in Zane’s eyes dim slightly – they were all adjusting to the idea, especially Zoe herself. Tyler must have sensed the change in the atmosphere between the cousins, because he decided to change the subject, "Speaking of which, do we have any kind of plan here or…?" He trailed off, leaving the question open-ended for one of them to answer. Zane quickly turned to look forward, and Marie realized there was no more point in trying to convince him to abandon the whole vigilante-vanquishing thing, "The plan is to vanquish the demon." "Great," Tyler responded, and she could hear the trace of anger in his tone, "Any chance you've mastered your powers or are you still throwing, freezing and exploding at random?" Marie leant forward and smacked him on the shoulder – not a good topic of discussion. Zane had somehow received Zack’s two main offensive powers, the ability to stop time and to blow things up, but still had very little control over them. Unfortunately, his original power of telekinesis was also somehow affected. She watched as Zane slowly turned to look at Tyler, whose eyes remained fixed on the road, and smiled in a very cold fashion, "Random, but you know what they say, there's nothing like field practice." He turned back to looking out of the windshield, and pointed wildly, yelling as he did, "Turn here!" Marie desperately held onto her lunch as the Mercedes screeched around another corner and floored in down an alley. She squinted and saw several forms, one dressed in black struggling with another individual. "Stop!" Zane yelled, and Marie lurched forward as Tyler slammed his foot down on the brakes. With the car still, Marie realized that the larger guy had the smaller by the scruff of his shirt, and she quickly unbuckled and jumped out of the car. She stood slightly behind Tyler as Zane stepped forward, and in a very loud voice, yelled, "Hey! Big scary demon!" Not letting his grip lessen at all, the demon turned to look at the three of them, and Marie shuddered when she saw the blood-red eyes he had. Even though he may not have full control, Marie was glad of Zane’s new powers. She watched as Zane lashed his arm out, telekinetically throwing the demon across the alley. Thank goodness his original power was still useful. The innocent fell to the ground, and looked up at them with fear-filled eyes, "Run. Go!" Marie yelled, as the demon got to his feet, his eyes glowing brighter as he approached. This time, Zane lifted both hands and flung them out at the demon. The demon stopped dead in his tracks, and steam began to emanate from his body. His skin began to change to a dark shade of red. Marie realised what was about to happen a second before Tyler yelled, "He's gonna blow!" Wasting no time, Marie spun around and dived into the car, slamming the door shut behind her as she heard a wet popping sound, and something going splat! against the windshield. She looked up somewhat hesitantly, and grimaced at the sight of green demon guts all over the window. She watched as Tyler leant forward, and as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened, turned on the windscreen wipers, which turned the goo into mush and smeared it across the windshield. She swallowed the rising bile in her throat. She turned slightly as the front passenger door opened and Zane casually climbed into the car, and in an almost sing-song voice, said, "Next!" For the first time in weeks, Zane grinned, in an extremely mischievous fashion. Not really taking it in, Marie looked at Tyler, and saw the surprise and shock she felt mirrored in his face. She looked back at Zane, whose grin dropped for a second, replaced by innocent surprise, before grinning again. Marie closed her eyes and leant back into her seat, pain forgotten – suddenly her bottom wasn’t what was concerning her anymore.
As Zane closed the Book, Marie walked over to the stand, trying to look her cousin in the eyes, but he kept his eyes down, staring at the Triquetra that adorned the cover, his fingers running over the ancient material. "Zane, Tyler does have a point. We do have a usual system for vanquishing demons, and it’s worked pretty well for the past three years." Zane snorted, which took Marie by surprise. "Don’t you think that Zack dying counts as a pretty big glitch in the system?" Marie tensed slightly. "You are not the only one who is angry, Zane. I am too. We all are." She jumped as Zane slapped the book’s leather cover. "Then why are you fighting me on this, Marie? What is the problem with getting a little proactive with the vanquishing?" Marie took a breath before answering, so her own anger did not spiral, and heatedly replied, "Because we're not ready to get proactive. That's what's wrong with it." She paused, calming. "We're barely ready for anything right now. I mean, just dealing with our everyday normal lives is hard enough." Zane gestured widely. "That is precisely my point. The faster we get rid of these demons, then that means the faster we can get back to our everyday normal lives." He stopped, and laughed darkly, "Or at least what is left of them, that is." He looked at her finally, "I know you want a normal life, Marie. Free of demons, death, all of it." "I’m also a mutant, Zane, remember?" Marie seethed slightly, "Even if we vanquished the Source and all the demons tomorrow, I’d still have to deal with the other half of my life – there is no getting rid of that."
As they walked away from the parked SUV, Marie couldn’t help but roll her eyes as Zane continued to rant about Zoe’s ‘borrowing’ of the Book of Shadows, "I don't understand how someone can be that stupid." "And I don't understand why you haven't stopped ranting since we left the mansion," she told him, having enough of the continuous ranting that had not stopped since they had found the Book missing. Zane had the grace to look embarrassed, as he took a deep breath, "You're right. You're right. I'm sorry." Marie nodded, "Yes, Zoe made a mistake." But the second she had spoke, Zane nearly exploded again, his eyes bulging, "A mistake!? She stole from us!" Marie huffed, knowing she was being pushed too far herself. "She borrowed. Borrowed!" Zane snorted. "S-sh-she threw our family heritage out of the window!" Marie winced as Zane waved his arms in frustration, afraid that in his present state, he may accidentally blow something up. She would have reached across and pushed his arms down, but she knew he wouldn’t appreciate the reminder about his lack over his new powers – Zack’s powers. She was glad that the area outside Westchester Social Services was pretty much deserted, and that there was no-one to witness any magical displays. "Well, that's because we never took the time to explain its significance. It was just a book to her." She waved her arms, emphasizing her point, but Zane did not seem to care, "Okay, Marie, it is not just a book. It's like, it-it-it is like a part of our family." I know that, she wanted to tell him, but Zane coughed again, and Marie took a deep breath of her own, and put her arm around him, "Zoe is not a killer. She didn't kill anyone. And she's not a demon that we're on our way to vanquish." Zane shot her a dark look, "I get that, Marie." She gave him a look of her own, "Do you? Because I don't think that you do." Zane turned away from her and coughed again, which worried Marie even more, "You alright?" Before she heard him answer, she heard a sudden rush of noise, as a group of voices spoke over each other, incredibly loudly. She turned and saw an older, slightly balding guy barrel out of the Social Services building, followed by a large horde of women, of all ages, who were literally climbing over each other to get close to the guy. Why, she had no idea - he didn’t even seem that attractive. It was also clear by his vain attempts to get away from them that he was not happy about the attention the women were showering on him. He screamed at them to get away from him, but they didn’t listen. Marie watched in stunned silence as the women surrounded him, and, as one, they fell to the ground. She felt her jaw drop, and turned and saw that Zane was equally surprised, "What the hell is going on?" Marie turned away, feeling slightly sick by the way they were all over the guy, and saw Zoe as she walked out of the door, almost slinking away, as if she wanted no one to see her. Marie noticed she was clutching her sweater closed over herself, and holding her handbag over her chest as well. Marie tried to hide a grin when Zoe looked up, and visibly paled when she realised that she had been found out. She froze on the spot, and Marie trailed behind Zane as he stormed over, "You are so…" Zane trailed off, and Marie followed his line of sight, and watched in mute amazement as he reached forward and pulled open Zoe’s sweater, "Busted?" That was an understatement – Zoe’s breasts were huge! Marie found herself staring at them for far too long, and blinked, looking away, "Hello!" She saw the embarrassment in Zoe’s face, and was about to ask what had happened, but Zane beat her to it, "You stole our sacred book so you could perform magical plastic surgery on yourself?" He was barely keeping the rage out of his voice, his tone still coming out sharp, and Zoe flinched visibly. "You think I did this on purpose?" She pulled her sweater closed again, "My body was perfectly fine just as it was, thank you very much." "I mean it! Get away from me!" Marie turned in surprise, having actually forgot about the crowd of women and their hapless victim. She watched as he continued to struggle, when suddenly, all motion stopped – the guy, the women, even the slight afternoon breeze. She turned around, and saw that Zane’s arms were outstretched, and she felt her stomach flip, "Zane!" she admonished, "You could have just blown up a dozen innocent people." Zane dismissed the notion with another snort, "I took a chance." Marie just glared at him, "See? Are you listening to yourself?" Marie was not happy as he ignored her and turned back to glare at Zoe, "What happened?" Zoe visibly shrank under Zane’s intense gaze, "I don't know. They just… grew." Marie hid a laugh at her oh-so-innocent expression, as Zane scoffed sarcastically, "Oh, right. And you had nothing to do with that." Zane’s interrogation was getting nowhere, so Marie quickly stepped in, "Did you cast any spells?" "One," Marie simply gave her a look, and Zoe swallowed, "Five." Marie shook her head, not hiding her amused smile this time, as Zane spoke, his tone barely restrained, "Five?" Marie shook her head, wishing Zane would back off, "Okay, what did you do just before you turned into Betty Boop?" She spoke before Zane could launch into the younger girl again, and Zoe seemed thankful to turn to her, and avoid Zane’s eyes, "Well, I cast a spell on this slimeball I work with so I could give him a taste of his own medicine." The pieces began to fall into place, "Uh-huh. That’s the slimeball?" She gestured at the frozen guy surrounded by women as she spoke, and Zoe looked over, nodding. "And that's the backfire," Zane muttered, shaking his head, eyeing her ridiculously enhanced breasts. Marie stifled a laugh as Zoe’s eyes widened in horror, "Backfire?" Marie nodded, "You misused magic to make him the object of ogling, and the spell backfired and did the same thing to you." As she spoke, she casually inclined her hand at Zoe’s magically enhanced breasts, and this time couldn’t help it as a small snort of laughter escaped as Zoe tugged her sweater tighter around them. Zane began to shrug off his jacket as he spoke, "Which you would have learned if you had bothered to ask." His jacket finally slipped off, but it did not slow his berating at Zoe as he handed it to her, and she gratefully took it, it’s larger size easily concealing her ‘enhancements’. "But now instead of vanquishing demons, we're gonna have to spend the entire afternoon fixing your breasts." Zoe leveled him with a stare. The guy's barely censoring what he says. Reaching her own limit, Marie raised a hand, trying to calm Zane once again, "Okay, Zane, call Kitty and get her to orb this slimeball back home." Zane gave her a look, and Marie shrugged, "We have to protect him until we can figure out a way to reverse the spell. Zoe and I will grab the book and meet you back at the mansion." Zane rolled his eyes, and shot another angry look at Zoe, shaking his head and mumbling under his breath as he walked over to the frozen crowd. Marie looked back at Zoe, and saw she was upset, and watched as she looked at her breasts again. Her heart went out to her cousin, and although she couldn’t blame Zane for being angry, she realised he was completely blowing it out of proportion. She just hoped that given time, he would finally calm down.
As her car sped down the highway back to Salem Centre, Zoe let out a frustrated sigh, looking out at the road, wishing it wasn’t so far from work to the Xavier School. "Are my boobs gonna stay this way forever?" she asked. When she had cast the spell on Donnie, she had not expected that it could result in such a backfire. Then again, she thought, Zane was right. If I had even bothered to ask, this wouldn't have happened. She looked down at her magically enlarged breasts, concealed underneath Zane's jacket, and sighed again. She looked over at her cousin, sat in the passenger seat, who was frowning and flipping through the Book to another page, "Not if I can ever find the reversing spell." With that asked, Zoe once again thought about her brother, and how angry he had been with her. "What about Zane? Is he gonna stay mad at me forever?" She heard Marie sigh, and Zoe looked over, seeing how tired she looked, "No," she said, shaking her head slightly. "It’s just that…he hasn’t really been himself lately. You know, a lot of ups and downs since Zack, you know, like us all." Guilt ran through her like blood, and she felt slightly nauseous. "The last thing I want to add to you guys is stress," she confessed. "I just wanted to get back at Donnie," She tried to get across how very sorry she was about all off it, the theft, the spells, the backfire. "Yeah," Marie replied. "I understand the temptation, Zoe, I really do," That alone made Zoe feel a lot better, "But I told you the book does not leave the mansion." She nodded, "Right. Sorry." She reached down and took hold of the gear stick, about to shift the car into third, but her arm butted against her breast, and she couldn’t move it right, "My breasts are in the way," she said, feeling it as her cheeks turning pink. "Can you put it into fourth for me?" Marie nodded and leaned over, taking hold of the stick, "Ready?" On Zoe’s nod, she quickly moved the gear into third, and Zoe braced herself as the car jolted a few times and the tires screeched and wailed, before settling down. "Alright," Marie said and went back to her flipping. Zoe looked over, and saw that she had stopped, "Have you found the spell yet?" She saw that Marie’s eyebrows had knitted together into a worried frown, "No," she confessed, and Zoe heard the shock in her tone, "But I found the demons... Oh my God." Zoe felt herself stiffen, and she had a feeling that her breasts were not what Marie was concerned with, "What?" she asked wildly. "You can’t say demons followed by ‘oh my god’. I’m new at this, I’m likely to panic." Marie seemed to shake herself back to normal, "Okay, uh, this is totally unrelated to our current situation but I think it just did. Okay, uh, a Fury's smoke kills bad guys. But in good people, it says here that it 'looks for a portal of unexpressed fury'." Zoe realised that Marie was quoting from the page she had found, but she was still confused. "And?" she prompted. Marie continued to study the Book, and Zoe had to force herself to continue watching the road, "'It builds until it consumes your humanity and it turns you into a Fury'." She stopped, and Zoe heard her swallow. "Um, we fought the Furies today. Zane got smoked." It took about a second for the meanings of the words to hit her. "Wait a minute," she asked nervously, "Are you saying that Zane’s turning into a demon?"
