| Cian "Why are Welsh bands so important to me? Because since I was 10 or maybe 11, they've been the soundtrack of my life. They've made me miss class 'cos I wouldn't move from my favourite spot on the floor in front of the stereo, distracted me from doing my homework 'cos I kept playing that special song over and over, made me fall out with mates 'cos they couldn't see the attraction and kept saying I was weird for not liking chart music. They've saved me from the boredom in a claustrophobic village where everyone knew everyone and you'd get sniggered at for being different, for wanting to stand out from the crowd. You'd stand and watch as some little kid with glasses got bullied by older kids and you'd count yourself lucky for being too weird to be picked at. These bands made me want to jump up and down and play airguitar, laugh and shout along to their songs, made me want to write a book, form a band of my own, get into A&R, start a record label, tidy my bedroom, change my hairstyle, shout at my ignorant parents, take my horrid little sister and brothers along to gigs, take my dog for a walk, watch a film, write silly things on my arms with a felt tip pen, wear make up, get drunk, become a politician, change the world, have sex for the first time, sleep in the back of a van, run away from home, see the world and meet new people, return home...but I decided to get involved in a fanzine. Never underestimate the power of music!" |
