| Owain Meredith was born in Cardiff in 1969 where he spent his early childhood before moving to Bala, North Wales. He has been writing for as long as he can remember, mostly about life itself. He now lives in Trefforest, Pontypridd and has a job looking through old films of Wales. His most recent novel is a sort of diary about a young man in todays Wales and as if writing books isnt a big achievement in itself hes also done some dance tracks for R-Bennig! A good introduction is Anturiaethau Fn Fawr a Bili Bach a cute but rather strange story published in 1995. Glitter: What inspires you to write? Owain: Sadness, how brief and exciting life is. I always listen to sad songs when I write and believe that happiness and sadness go hand in hand. Glitter: Whats the story behind Lleucu Llinos on the Egni compilation tape? Owain: I was approached by Johnny R, hed already written the track. I made up a story about this girl Llinos and then we recorded it. Glitter: Is there such a thing as a Welsh scene? Owain: Yes and its all in response to whats happening in England. The Welsh scene is a proud one and its much easier now in the sense that everyones more confident about themselves. The trouble in Wales is that most things have been done by Welsh speakers, but now everyone can do it. Glitter: Is there more of a divide between Welsh speakers and non-Welsh speakers than there is between North and South Wales? Owain: Yes, theres not really a divide between North and South Wales, but there is one between Welsh speakers and non-Welsh speakers. The latter have always felt inferior but theres more of a unity now, you can be Welsh without speaking Welsh, so thats changed for the better. Glitter: Who do you regard as cool? Owain: Ron Davies, my brother Gruff (Meredith, of Tystion and Datsyn fame), Cerys of Catatonia, T Llew Jones. Glitter: What makes you happy? Owain: Food, architecture, trees, water, travelling on buses. Glitter: What do you dream about? Owain: Girls, killing people, going to the toilet. Glitter: Who did you admire as a kid? Owain: Myself, Owain Glyndwr, Jesus Christ and Chaka Khan. Glitter: Do you have a favourite book you always carry with you? Owain: There are three - Barti Ddu by T Llew Jones, Tipyn o Annwyd by Wil Cwch Angas and Asterix and Obelix. Glitter: Which was the first gig you went to? Owain: Corwen 1982, Rhiannon Thomas ar band. Glitter: Which was the first record you bought? Owain: Goreuon Hogiaur Wyddfa. Glitter: Have you ever been involved in the making of a fanzine? Owain: Yes, "Yo Uchelseinydd" ("Yo Loudspeaker"), it was full of crazy thoughts. Glitter: Any future plans? Owain: To start a pagan church and I want to be the greatest writer in Wales (C) Glitter Fanzine 1998 |
