| Nr Dylan Williams from Pwhellis finest tells us the story. Interview for Glitter, autumn 1998 When did you first get interested in music, and more importantly what got you interested? Dylan: We first got interested in music when our balls dropped and at that time we thought it would be a good opportunity to get women if you were in a band. This obviously would give us sexual relief without having to do it ourselves. Can a band like Nr influence young people into thinking that Welsh is cool and encourage them to learn Welsh? Nr has never been a political group so in that sense we will never encourage young people to speak Welsh for political reasons. If a song sounds better in Welsh we sing in Welsh, if it sounds better in English we play it in English. If we knew Swedish wed probably write some in Swedish. Every song we write has a Welsh and a English version, but I wouldnt consider us to be the band that will save the Welsh language and lead the youth into thinking that Welsh is the coolest thing on earth. We definitely consider ourselves a Welsh band and we hope that we create some kind of Welsh awareness through our music. Who did you admire as a kid? I admired a whole lot of bizarre things when I was a kid. I remember there was this childrens programme called Bag Puss whish was about this magical toy cat witch came to live at night. This cat lived in an antique shop and when the cat would come to life all these other things would come to life such as an ornamental wooden woodpecker and a wooden mice who lived in an old pipeorgan. Every night they would fix broken things in the shop and I remember one episode where they fixed a packet of broken biscuits, I thought it was brilliant, really surreal! I also admired the Bionic Woman unfortunately she was a bit old for me at the time. Who do you regard as cool nowadays? I still think the Bionic Woman is cool come to think of it, so is Wonder Woman. Salvador Dali was cool he was one hell of a space cadet, which in my opinion is/was the most influential man in the art world. Hail Dali! It the music world I think that Jarvis Cocker from Pulp is cool and so is Ozzy Ozbourne, Nick Cave, and Lou Reed is cool because theyre such mad bastards! What makes you happy? Sleeping, drinking, eating and everything ending in ing. First gig? Alice Cooper Trash Tour. First record? Brotherhood of Man Save all your kisses for me. What did you dream last night? Dreams really pisses me of because when you have a meaningfully dream you cant remember it, when you have a total pointless dream you remember it all, such as dreaming about a cow riding a cow riding a bike while eating thirty cakes. When you have a really cool dream, in my case involving about 70 women in it, my mother always wakes me up when I get to the good bit. Favorite Welsh language band? GORKYS!!! Whats the naughtiest thing youve ever done? The list would be endless... Do you believe in a Welsh parliament? Yes, but were not that politically informed to make a sensible answer Have you ever been involved in the making of a fanzine? We have never been involved in the making of a fanzine but weve done a few interviews for them. When reading a fanzine like I like to read the gig reviews and thats what I would write about A view from the bar on Welsh gigs. Charlotte is thinking of buying a rat, but her mam wont let her, any suggestions? I have loads of pets because I live on a farm but the advise I have for Charlotte is very cunning and clever. First of all by the rat but dont tell your mother, that is the cunning part. Now here comes the clever part: disguise the rat as a furry ashtray or other household objects. Any future plans we should know about? We are now planning out our album called The Pornographic Epic which we will start to record in December sometime. Hopefully Steffan Cravos from the band Tystion will be putting some tracks down with us on the album, which will be very interesting. And to become the biggest power pop band in the world! |
