| Liverpool, Leeds, Croydon, Brighton, Leicester, Cardiff, London, Oxford...Girlfrendo are sick of touring. "I cant remember when I last had a proper cooked breakfast," says Sara. "Or a shower" says Josephine. "And we've developed an allergy to sleeping bags!" Girlfrendo are Nicke (bass/guitar/vocals) Anders K (keyboards/vocals) Goldenboy (guitar/vocals) Pr (vocals) Josephine even plays the tambourine when she feels like it. They formed in Gothenburg nearly two years ago, played in dozens of youth clubs before they were given the chance to play at the Lollipop festival last year and now they are touring Britain. This is their first time in Wales and they're still struggling with the pronounciatin of certain names, hungover and tired from the night before when they played Clwb Ifor Bach and found their way into many Welshmen's (and women's) hearts. They've released five singles on the Japanese label Pio!Bambini, run by the eccentric Mr Kazuoeta who's well cool, according to the girls. "But Josephine is the coolest" says Sara. What are your influences? "60's girlgroups. Our keyboardplayer likes salsa and Pr's into funk. There's so many of us and we've all got different tastes in music but it's not necessarily a bad thing!" They don't feel part of the Swedish scene, because musically they're ostracized from most other bands and Swedish people haven't got a clue. The ones in Gothenburg anyway. Sara and Josephine grew up in the small town of Bors, a textile factory nightmare where nothing ever happens. They played Madonna, Michael Jacksson, Bon Jovi and Elvis Presley on their tape recorders, dreamt about being popstars and read Tintin cartoons. So you prefer touring Britain then? "People over here understand music. It's easier to get gigs, not just shitty ones down the youthclub, they appreciate music, the desperation and that's what makes it all worthwhile." Empty your pockets girls! Contents: 1 plectrum, eyeliner, keys, 1 notepad, 1 pen, a walkman, 1 set of clean underwear. |
