Euros Childs of Gorky's Zygotic Mynci Glitter interview winter 1998 g: Tell us a little about yourselves. e: We formed in 1991 whilst still in school, about 15 years old. Released our first LP "Patio" in 1993, a compilation of radio sessions we did from 1991-93, then "Tatay" in 1994, "Bwyd Time" in 1995... g: What do you sing about? e: We sing about lots of things, anything that captures our imagination. There's songs about our childhood, sunsets, stomachs, electricity cuts, depression, teachers, girls, alsatians, polly filler...so we cover quite a lot of subjects in our songs. g: What are your influences? e: We listen to a lot of different music. We all like Nick Drake, Spiritualized, Beck, Orbital, Richard Thompson and Ivor Cutler. g: Is image important? e: We never thought about having an image really. I think other people have decided what our image should be, i.e "drug addled mushroom chomping hippies", which was a creation by the British music press. But we're not really bothered about converting an image. g: Do you speak Welsh to each other? e: We speak Welsh and English to each other. g: Is there such a thing as a "Welsh scene"? e: No. g: Is there a difference between North and South Wales, music wise? e: I don't think there's one style of music in North Wales or South Wales. We sound completely different from 60ft Dolls and they're from South Wales. So really every band in Wales are different from each other. g: Who do you regard as cool? e: John Peel! g: What makes you happy? e: Sunshine, friendship and a good piss-up. g: What do you dream about? e: Massmurder. g: Do you have any phobias? e: Megan has a phobia about flying, which is a bit of a problem seeing as we go on planes quite often. Me and John don't like wasps, but I wouldn't call it a phobia. g: Who did you look up to as children? e: Our parents, they were taller than us, he he. g: Name three records that changed your life. e: The Beatles "She loves you", Sex Pistols "Pretty Vacant", Fairport Convention "Liege & Life". g: Have you ever been involved in the making of a fanzine? e: Only through doing interviews, but I once did quite a sick cartoon for Steffan Cravos's fanzine "Psyko". I'm still doing the cartoons, but I can't print them for fear of being arrested for obscenity! g: Tell us a little about your latest record "Barafundle", it sounds quite different from the previous ones, almost "folkish" at times. e: "Barafundle" is a collection of songs we wrote over the past two years. It took three months to record and we're very happy with it. I suppose the songs have been done in a quite "folkish" sort of way, that's probably the use of only acoustic guitars and vocals at times. We could have chosen to do the album in the style of loud rock or synth pop or Bulgarian rectum music, but we chose to be us and we hope you like it. (C) Glitter Fanzine 1998 |
