True Love

Sometimes it seems like no one really cares,

About what we think or feel,

They only care about what we can do for them.

If we can give them material things,

They are right there on the spot.

But if we want to share something of ourselves with them,

They have no interest at all.

But it is not the material things that are important,

At least they are not supposed to be.

God wants us to love each other,

And too often we think that love means giving material things.

That is not what true love is all about.

True love is giving oneself totally,

And not worrying about what we will get in return.

True love means forgiving others,

Not keeping score of wrongs done to us.

Love is spending time together,

And sharing the good as well as the bad.

True love means taking a chance,

And not being judgmental,

And it means sharing our innermost thoughts.

We need to keep our promises to those that we love,

And always try to keep our faith and love alive.

True love means listening to others,

Even when we don’t agree with them.

Love without trust and respect is nothing,

But kindness and compassion go a long way.

We must constantly strive for better understanding,

Being open and honest and true,

And we need to have loyal and steadfast hearts.

Encouraging growth and expression of self,

Giving others the freedom to be who they really are,

Without trying to make them into whom we want them to be.

Love is being able to cope with change,

And so we need to take it one day at a time,

Trying to be hopeful and positive in everything that we do.

And, sadly, there are times when love means letting go,

Setting someone else free,

Even when it is breaking our hearts to do so,

Sometimes that is what true love really means.
