Preserving our Heritage

Progress means leaving school buildings with boarded-up windows,
Sitting bleak and empty in the shifting shadows.
They will no longer be home to children's voices and laughter,
But to our leaders it doesn't really seem to matter.
Some of our schools must be torn down,
What a sadness prevails all over our town!
Good teachers and others are out of a job,
When demolition day comes, we will hear a great sob!
Preserving our heritage is their motto,
What are they doing with the state lotto?
Who are they helping by destroying our history?
The future generation will not know how it used to be!
No more children walking a few blocks to school,
Riding a school bus is the new rule.
Everywhere we look, houses are for sale,
What is happening now is such a sad tale!
Progress is what they say we need,
New school buildings will help the children read.
All that matters is how things look,
But what they really need is good teachers and books!
