History

Charling started off as just Thom and Chris, who jammed together playing stuff like Smells Like Teen Spirit. Soon the idea to form a band came about, so they got Georgey Smithey on guitar and Hilly on bass. They played under the name Amoebic during years 10 and 11. During this time Owen was playing bass with Mantis Blue (later to become Armagibbon, thats why there are pictures of me on there site) and a 'friendly' rivalry developed between the two bands, as they were both the same age and style (to a certain extent) and played occasional gigs together. Due to musical differences Owen left Mantis Blue at the end of 1999. Meanwhile, Ameobics guitarist George had gone crazy and tried to kill the rest of Ameobic, so he was replaced with James Lam, though not for long. On july 1st 2000 Owen joined Ameobic as the previous bassist Hilly left. The band then went through a number of names including Eve, Beckets Dog, Thom Parsely, Blunt, Cheesegrater, Chi and Char Lung before, at a band competition in Norwich, a man wearing a skintight lycra silver catsuit miss pronounced our name as Charling. Soon after that Simon haycock joined the band and Charling was complete. Since then we have written several albums worth of material and gigged around locally. (one of which was Kizz Fest 2001 where everything went wrong apart from the music). At the moment we have recorded our first proper EP, in the febuary half term, and now we are starting to gig around at venues such as The Waterfront and the Ferryboat, in an effort to get signed before we all go off to university.
