First Sergeant's Corner

| First Sergeant
Grady Trainer was the first Top Sergeant of Co C. On 18 December
1965 during the first real battle of the JUMPING MUSTANGS in
Operation "SCALPING MUSTANG" in Binh Dinh area vicinity of Ben Khe,
there were many acts of individual heroism. Among those heroes was
First Sergeant Grady Trainor. On the landing zone with his company,
he demonstrated outanding courage and devotion to duty as he
arranged casualty evacuation back to the pick up point and
resupplied his troops with amnunition. It was necessary to carry the
casualties across the exposed fire-swept landing zone for a distance
of two or three hundred yards. I watched 1st Sergeant Trainor time
and time again, personally carry the wounded, with another man or
two assisting, to the pick up zone and then back for more wounded.
The last time I observed him that fateful day, he had discarded
weapons, harness and everthing else and was wearing only his helmet
to facilitate carrying wounded men. He certainly showed vividly that
day, he was one of the outstanding professional non commissioned
officers of the United States Army. He truly set an excellent
example for the other great NCO's in our Jumping Mustang Battalion.
A true Soldier, dedicated to his men, company and battalion. He
provided positive proof again of the excellence of his company. He
was later awarded the Silver Star for his heroic action. (From
Mustang 6).
