I will from time to time write on subjects and post interesting news articles. Feel free to give me your imput. However this is a personal Web Site and is a way for me to express my ideas and writings in a creative fun way. It is not intended to be a definitive source. Caveat Emptor! Now with that being said, I would like to put it another way. Bring on the donuts! |

(Have we made the wrong choice?) It is the purpose of this paper to make the case that we as Christians have made a wrong choice in going from Saturday to Sunday worship; I will explore popular beliefs as well as scholarly arguments as to why we have changed our day of worship. What is the Sabbath? In Hebrew its called Shabat meaning rest. Its the seventh day. And on the seventh day God finished the work that He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all the work that He had done. 3 So God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it, because on it God rested from all the work that He had done in creation (The HarperCollins Study Bible, Gen. 2.2-3). Although the word Sabbath is not mentioned in this passage it is implied. The first mention of the word Sabbath is where Mosses and the tribes are in the desert. God is instructing them on how to use the manna. 22. And it came to pass, that on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for each one: and all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses. 23. And he said unto them, This is that which Jehovah hath spoken, Tomorrow is a solemn rest, a holy Sabbath unto Jehovah: bake that which ye will bake, and boil that which ye will boil; and all that remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning. (American Standard Version Bible. Ex. 16:22-23). This passage shows that Mosses had commanded them to keep the Sabbath and that it was holy unto Jehovah. Notice that this comes before the Ten Commandments were received by Mosses and that the word Sabbath is mentioned four times in Ex.16:23-29. So that in Ex. 20: 8-11 we read. 8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9. Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work. 10. but the seventh day is a sabbath unto Jehovah thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy man-servant, nor thy maid-servant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates. 11. for in six days Jehovah made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore Jehovah blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it (American Standard Version Bible,). I included all these passages to show the emphasis Jehovah had on it. More is mentioned on the fourth commandment than any other commandment, sixty two words in the Hebrew where as only fifty words in the Hebrew for the second commandment; Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image (Transliterate Unaccented Bible). So lets re-cap a little. I have shown that the Sabbath was kept before Mosses received the ten commandments. And that its observance was commanded in the fourth commandment with more emphases placed upon it than any other commandment. With the coming of the synagogue the Sabbath became a day to worship and to study the Law (the first five books of the Old Testament). Keeping the Sabbath was kept up stringently until the time of the Christian era. By this time the laws and proclamations on the Sabbath were so numerous, that it had become a burden on the average Jew. According to the International Standard Bible Encyclopedia, Two entire treatises of the Mishnah, Shabbath and Erubhin, are devoted to the details of Sabbath observance (Bromiley, volume 4, page 2631). All these rules and regulations placed upon the |
