PEGGY SHANNON, Pine Bluff's answer to the "IT" girl, Clara Bow.
Peggy Shannon was born Winona Sammon in Pine Bluff in 1909 or 1910, depending on the source.  She was described as "blonde and plump" while growing up. She was discovered by Flo Ziegfeld while on a trip to New York city with her mother in the mid twenties and started her career as a dancer in the famous showman's Follies.  In the late twenties, she appeared in several stage plays before being signed by Paramount Pictures' Bud Schulberg.  Peggy was rushed to replace Clara Bow in a film titled "The Secret Call".  Miss Bow had suffered a nervous breakdown and had to be hospitalized.  Peggy co-starred with another beginner, Spencer Tracy in a couple of films.  Going back to New York, she appeared with a then unknown Jimmy Stewart in a Broadway play.  Returning to Hollywood, she played in a string of forgettable films before dying in May, 1941.
Clara's "rival", Peggy!
